West African leaders under the auspices of West African Elders Forum (WAEP) say African leaders should make deliberate efforts to ensure that democracy in the continent is sustained through accountability and strengthening of\u00a0\u00a0state institutions in order\u00a0\u00a0to reverse the trend of democratic erosion and eliminate the culture of political violence in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The leaders who spoke at an online conversation tagged: \u201c<\/span>Political Competition as a Trigger for Instability in Africa, \u201d organized by the West African Elders Forum (an Initiative of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation )in collaboration\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with the Yale International Leadership Centre noted\u00a0\u00a0that Africa must look inward to solve its political problems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

They stated that political\u00a0competition is a trigger to instability in the continent and urged\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0leaders\u00a0\u00a0to be accountable, inclusive and just in order\u00a0\u00a0to sustain democracy and maintain peace across nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI hold the view that as leaders you have to be accountable to your people.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He noted that where there is\u00a0 an effective means of holding leaders accountable, there is always an opportunity to review their performance without any difficulties,saying however that when leaders get into offices\u00a0 ignoring promises made to their people,and re<\/span>sponsibilities expected of them to their people\u00a0 problems become inevitable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
