{"id":49758,"date":"2021-06-15T19:58:32","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T18:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=49758"},"modified":"2021-06-15T19:58:32","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T18:58:32","slug":"rising-prices-pushed-seven-million-nigerians-below-poverty-line-in-2020-world-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/rising-prices-pushed-seven-million-nigerians-below-poverty-line-in-2020-world-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising Prices Pushed Seven Million Nigerians Below Poverty Line In 2020 \u2013 World Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank has said rising prices pushed about seven million Nigerians below the poverty line in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a press statement titled, \u2018Critical reforms needed to reduce inflation and accelerate the recovery, says new World Bank report,\u2019 released by the World Bank\u2019s Senior External Affairs Officer of Nigeria, Mansir Nasir.<\/p>\n<p>The press statement was released in line with the latest World Bank Nigeria Development Update.<\/p>\n<p>It was acknowledged that the Federal Government \u201ctook measures to protect the economy against a much deeper recession\u201d but it was recommended that certain policies should be set for a strong recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u201cThe NDU, titled \u2018Resilience through Reforms,\u2019 notes that in 2020 the Nigerian economy experienced a shallower contraction of -1.8% than had been projected at the beginning of the pandemic (-3.2%). Although the economy started to grow again, prices are increasing rapidly, severely impacting Nigerian households. As of April 2021, the inflation rate was the highest in four years. Food prices accounted for over 60% of the total increase in inflation.
