The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) has completed the review of the case file forwarded by the police with respect to alleged sexual assault and defilement of a minor by Nollywood Actor, Mr. Olanrewaju James aka Baba Ijesha, and established a prema facie (evidence) case against him.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
In a statement on Tuesday by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo, the government said Baba Ijesha has been recommended for prosecution for the following offences:<\/span><\/div>\n

\u2022Indecent Treatment of a child<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022Defileme<\/span>nt of a Child<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022Sexual Assault by Penetration<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2022Attempted Sexual Assault by Penetration and<\/span><\/div>\n

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE CASE OF COMMISSIONER OF POLICE V OLANREWAJU JAMES (BABA IJESHA)<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
It would be recalled that the Nigeria Police Force arrested Mr. Olanrewaju James (also referred to as Baba Ijesha) on account of various sexual abuse allegations.\u00a0 On the 30th of April, 2021, the Police forwarded the\u00a0 case file of COP v Olanrewaju James to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advise.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
After due consideration of the facts in the case file, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions issued legal advise\u00a0 on the 4th of May, 2021,\u00a0 which is to the effect that a prima facie case has been disclosed against Mr. Olanrewaju James and recommended he be charged under the following provisions of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015:<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Section 135, Indecent Treatment of a child-\u00a0 punishable by 7 years imprisonment,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Section 137- Defilement of a Child-, punishable by life imprisonment,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0Section 261- Sexual Assault by Penetration-\u00a0 punishable by life imprisonment,\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Section 262- Attempted Sexual Assault by Penetration, punishable by 14 years imprisonment and\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Section 263, Sexual Assault- punishable by 3 years imprisonment.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Whilst the\u00a0 State would ensure that\u00a0 Mr. Olanrewaju James\u2019s rights\u00a0 as enshrined in the Constitution are upheld, the Ministry of Justice would not relent in its efforts in ensuring that whoever sexually abuses any\u00a0 resident of Lagos\u00a0 State is speedily brought to book.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
It is instructive to note that the Lagos State Ministry of Justice has been consistent in it\u2019s efforts in protecting the vulnerable in our society and since the establishment of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team in 2014, it has till date prosecuted over 800 cases of Sexual and Domestic offenses.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
The Attorney-General hereby assures Lagosians and indeed Nigerians that\u00a0 in accordance with the DPP\u2019s advise,\u00a0 charges would be filed accordingly.<\/span><\/div>\n
