{"id":48023,"date":"2021-04-07T18:47:02","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T17:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=48023"},"modified":"2021-04-08T08:59:57","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T07:59:57","slug":"ipc-publishes-survey-report-on-health-coverage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/ipc-publishes-survey-report-on-health-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"IPC Publishes Survey Report On Health Coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"adn ads\" data-message-id=\"#msg-f:1696432774545369410\" data-legacy-message-id=\"178af09ed01b6942\">\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":oy\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":ox\" class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em>&#8230;to train 45 journalists on Investigative Healthcare reporting\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria has released the report of the one-month survey of coverage of health issues by four Nigerian newspapers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In a release signed by the media NGO&#8217;s Programme Manager, Sanmi Falobi, the monitored media organisations include: the Punch, Daily Sun, Vanguard \u00a0and Premium Times for the month of December 2020.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Falobi said, &#8216;The newspapers were randomly selected for the survey in order to have baseline information on the state of media reporting of health issues ahead of the training of 45 Nigerian journalists on accountability and impactful reporting of the health sector from this month.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Executive Director, IPC in his own comment said, &#8220;It is good that the concerned newspapers gave robust coverage to health issues particularly the Covid-19 pandemic but there were noticeable gaps in such areas as prominence, sources.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Breaking down findings of the monitoring activities, Arogundade said, &#8220;The summary of the outcome of the one-month survey showed that while the specific issue of COVID-19 accounted for 65.7% of the relevant reports, &#8216;\u2019maternal health\u2019\u2019 had 5.3%; \u2018\u2019malaria\/typhoid\u2019\u2019, \u00a03% and \u2018\u2019diabetes\u2019\u2019 2.4%. Coverage of \u2018\u2019Cancer\u2019\u2019 was 2%; \u2018\u2019public health\u2019\u2019, 0.9%; \u2018\u2019mental health\u2019\u2019, 0.48% and \u2018\u2019Other viral infections\u2019\u2019, 0.48%.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;In terms of prominence, majority of the reports were published on the Inside Page (79%) followed by the Front Page (7.3%) and editorial page ( 3.7%).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;The context of the events were &#8216;events coverage&#8217; (32.2%), &#8216;press release&#8217; (31%,) and &#8216;press conference&#8217; (12.6%) whereas &#8216;investigations\u2019&#8217; accounted for 13% and interviews (10.7%).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8221; Most of the sources used were &#8216;Government officials&#8217; (28.2%); &#8216;Health Professionals&#8217; , (23.2%); &#8216;Health Institutions\/Authorities&#8217; as sources accounted for (11%); &#8216;Professional Bodies&#8217; , (5.35%); &#8216;Development\/Donor community\u2019 and \u2018CSOs\u2019 (5% each); \u2018Foreign health institutions\u2019, (4.6%); \u2018Citizens\u2019, (4%,) and \u2019Other Professionals\u2019 (0.36%,).
