The Imo State Police Command Headquarters and the Correctional Facility (Prison) both located in Owerri have been attacked by gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN).<\/p>\n

The facilities according to a police Situation Reports (SITREP) obtained by our correspondent and dated 5th April, titled: SIB IMO. SITREP. ATTACK ON PRISONS AND POLICE STATE HEADQUARTERS revealed that about 0100hrs, armed men suspected to be members of IPOB\/ESN criminal gang in their numbers invaded Owerri Prisons using dynamites and other heavy explosives.<\/p>\n

It was learnt that they had gained entrance and released some inmates in the prison.<\/p>\n

However, the police couldn’t revealed details of the level of carnage done to the facility and the number of inmates released as they are yet to determine those facts.<\/p>\n

However, unconfirmed sources say that over 1,500 inmates might have been released and unknown number of security agents killed in the process.<\/p>\n

It was further learnt that “the hoodlums also attacked the Police State Headquarters, Owerri while firing consistently with AK 47 rifles and explosives, released some suspects detained in the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) cell and put fire on so many vehicles parked at the Headquarter premises including the SCID office building.<\/p>\n

“The onslaught\/operation lasted close to three hours. The attacked facilities will be assessed very shortly and details communicated accordingly.”<\/p>\n

Attempt to get clarification from the Imo State Police spokesperson, SP Ikeokwu Godson Orlando failed as questions sent to his WhatsApp line were not responded to.<\/p>\n

Tension has been the option rather than the exception in the South Eastern states in the last few weeks with several police personnel, Army, Navy and other persons hacked to death.<\/p>\n
