{"id":45846,"date":"2020-12-29T03:16:02","date_gmt":"2020-12-29T02:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=45846"},"modified":"2021-01-03T07:21:26","modified_gmt":"2021-01-03T06:21:26","slug":"usaid-ends-funding-helping-babies-breathe-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/usaid-ends-funding-helping-babies-breathe-program\/","title":{"rendered":"USAID Ends Funding Helping Babies Breathe Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tayo Olanipekun<\/p>\n<p>The United States Agency for International Development has phased out its financial support for the Help Babies Breathe, an intervention program for preventing newborn deaths.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/USAID\">USAID<\/a> mobilized over $120 million for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en-us\/advocacy-and-policy\/aap-health-initiatives\/helping-babies-survive\/Pages\/HBB-10th-Anniversary.aspx?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">HBB <\/a>through partnership in the last 10 years and helped roll out this life-saving intervention in more than 80 countries, including Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>But the aids agency said in a statement on Tuesday that it would stop funding the program as \u201cmany national governments have integrated newborn resuscitation fully and sustainably into the way they deliver care for mothers and their infants at birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Nigeria, presently, experts say the country loses more than 250,000 babies yearly to preventable and treatable causes. The country also ranks highest in Africa and second highest globally in infant deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The primary health care facilities are operating at different levels of functionality with shortages of critical human resources.
