{"id":40706,"date":"2020-06-11T10:15:12","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T09:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=40706"},"modified":"2020-06-11T10:15:12","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T09:15:12","slug":"covid-19-pandemic-domestic-investors-now-account-for-60-transactions-on-nse-onyema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/covid-19-pandemic-domestic-investors-now-account-for-60-transactions-on-nse-onyema\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Pandemic: Domestic Investors Now Account For 60% Transactions On NSE \u2013 Onyema"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) says low yield environment caused by Coronavirus pandemic has positioned the equity market with domestic investors accounting for 60 per cent of market transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Oscar Onyema, NSE Chief Executive Officer, gave the submission on Wednesday at webinar organised by the Exchange with the theme: `Capital Markets in a Pandemic\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Onyema said low yield environment had positioned the equity markets as a credible alternative for domestic institutional and retail investors.<\/p>\n<p>He said that domestic investors had risen to the occasion in sustaining the equities market performance, accounting for about 60 per cent of trading activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurprisingly, domestic investors have risen to the occasion in sustaining the equities market performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, domestic investors have accounted for almost 60 per cent of the trading activity compared to an average of 51 per cent in the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these economic headwinds, the NSE All-Share Index has returned month on month gains of 8.1 per cent and 9.8 per cent at the end of April and May, respectively,\u201d Onyema said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the pandemic had resulted in a decline in oil export earnings \u2013 which accounts for over 80 per cent of Nigeria\u2019s export earnings \u2013 and remittances by Nigerians in the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcurrently, foreign portfolio investor flight to safety has further intensified pressures on the nation\u2019s foreign reserves and exchange rate,\u201d Onyema said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that liquidity in the foreign exchange window accessible to investors was also affected.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO stressed the need for collaboration among exchanges, governments as well as use of technologies to remain resilient in the face of COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the pandemic has changed the way and manner things used to be before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology has long been a fundamental building block for growth in capital markets.<br \/>\nToday, digitisation and advanced analytics offer tremendous new potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe capital markets industry, today, finds itself in a transitional period where it can adapt to digital trends and technologies as well as innovate with new business models and products\/services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the NSE, we see asset digitalisation beginning to create a whole new user experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Exchange has continued to leverage on its cutting-edge technology and various innovative platforms to ensure continued trading and listing activities on its bourse,\u201d Onyema said.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Nandini Sukumar, Chief Executive Officer, World Federation of Exchanges, said capital market investment would be safe with stakeholders\u2019 collective efforts.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Sukumar said exchanges would continue to ensure fair and orderly market even in the time of distress and international shocks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"main\" class=\"clearfix\">\n<div class=\"inner-wrap clearfix\">\n<div id=\"primary\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"clearfix\">\n<article id=\"post-37204\" class=\"post-37204 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-capital-markets category-markets category-top-story\">\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>\u201cStock exchanges exist to provide robust market structures that support issuers and investors, and we have seen this resilience amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis resilience has not been an accident.
