{"id":37689,"date":"2020-01-17T11:12:04","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T10:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=37689"},"modified":"2020-01-17T11:12:04","modified_gmt":"2020-01-17T10:12:04","slug":"fg-signs-mou-on-digital-skills-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/fg-signs-mou-on-digital-skills-development\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Signs MoU On Digital Skills Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tech giant, International Business Machines (IBM) West Africa, for partnership and collaboration in the area of Digital Skills development in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) who entered into the agreement on behalf of the government on Thursday 16th January 2020, said it was a further demonstration and commitment of the present government on digital skill literacy to the nigerian populace.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership, the minister said will further give impetus to the digital, innovation and Entrepreneurship skills of the economic development plan of the government, and serve as a quantum leap in the Digital Economy strategy of the Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MoU provides a platform to empower\u00a0 Nigerian youths with digital literacy skills, to enable innovation, design and development of indigenous solutions, self-sufficiency and make Nigeria a hub for critical skills for Africa and the world at large.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, under the partnership, and in line with the Digital Literacy initiative and drive of Dr Pantami, IBM will through its Digital Nation Africa Initiative, provide free training to Nigerians for a period of 12 to 16 weeks, in diverse areas of Information Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The objectives of the MoU are mainly to:<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Create awareness and support in the development and use of digital tools and applications to improve the delivery of government services;<\/li>\n<li>Create a pool of Nigerians with digital skills validated by globally recognized certifications;<\/li>\n<li>Bridge the gap between the academia and the industry through sensitization on digital tools and skills; and<\/li>\n<li>Lower the access barrier to digital tools for the citizens.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Addressing IBM representatives led by the Country General Manager, the Minister expressed satisfaction at the organisation\u2019s response to the Digital Economy policy by, sufficiently keying in, to bridge the divide between the academia and the industry, education and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Pantami noted that \u201cto achieve a Digital Economy, digital skills are central, and this has been adequately captured in the second pillar of the Digital Economy Strategy Policy Document as approved and launched by the President on the 28th of November 2019\u201d. The Minister further disclosed that the importance of Broadband in the implementation of a Digital Economy is the lifeline to its success and this again has been reflected in the seventh pillar of the strategy document. \u201cThe importance of broadband penetration in achieving a digital economy has given rise to the National Broadband Committee to ensure that we thoroughly address the impediments to broadband penetration and achieving a Digital Economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pantami encouraged institutions of learning to give priority to skills, especially digital skills over paper qualifications as according to him, \u201cdigital skills are more relevant in today\u2019s world of emerging technologies, therefore we must encourage innovation and drive digital literacy and skills among the populace\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks at the signing ceremony which held at the Minister\u2019s conference room in Abuja, the Country General Manager Mr Dipo Faulkner, stated that \u201cIBM works with governments and key Ministries to address the societal impact of digital technology, leveraging our investment in education with platforms such as IBM Digital Nation Africa.
