**Says Children In North East Nigeria Suffered 20,000 Grave Violations in 7 Years<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/span>Children continue to pay a deadly price as conflicts rage around the world, including in Nigeria\u2019s north-east where the figure of violations against children is almost 20,000 in the last seven years, UNICEF said today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the start of the decade, the United Nations has verified more than 170,000 grave violations against children in conflict \u2013 the equivalent of more than 45 violations every day for the last 10 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The body identified the six grave violations it monitored to include killing and maiming of children, recruitment and use of children by armed forces and armed groups, sexual violence against children, attacks against schools or hospitals, abduction of children and denial of humanitarian access for children.<\/p>\n

\u201cTen years of conflict in Nigeria\u2019s north-east \u2013 closely coinciding with the decade about to end \u2013 has seen a massive level of violations against Nigeria\u2019s children in the region. These include killings, maiming, abductions, rape, severe psychological trauma, and extreme disruption of their education \u2013 leaving them vulnerable possibly for the rest of their lives,\u201d said Pernille Ironside, UNICEF Nigeria\u2019s Acting Representative.<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren should never be a target in any armed conflict \u2013 and everything must be done to protect children when they find themselves in areas of conflict. Sadly, this has too often not been the case during the conflict in north-east Nigeria, with children paying the heaviest price for the ongoing crisis.\u201d<\/p>

Beyond Nigeria, the number of countries experiencing conflict is the highest it has been since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989,\u00a0with\u00a0dozens of violent armed conflicts killing and maiming children and forcing them from their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cConflicts around the world are lasting longer, causing more bloodshed and claiming more young lives,\u201d said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF\u2019s Executive Director.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cA<\/span>ttacks on children continue unabated as warring parties flout one of the most basic rules of war: the protection of children.\u00a0For every act of violence against children that creates headlines and cries of outrage, there are many more that go unreported.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, the UN\u00a0verified more than 24,000 grave violations against children globally, including killing, maiming, sexual violence, abductions, denial of humanitarian access, child recruitment and attacks on schools and hospitals. While monitoring and reporting efforts have been strengthened, this number is more than two-and-a-half times higher than that recorded in 2010.<\/p>\n

More\u00a0than 12,000 children\u00a0were killed or maimed globally in 2018 \u2013 almost 800 of them in Nigeria\u2019s north-east.<\/p>\n

UNICEF calls on all warring parties, including in Nigeria, to abide by their obligations under international law and to immediately end violations against children and the targeting of civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals and water infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n
