{"id":36569,"date":"2019-11-28T14:20:02","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T13:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=36569"},"modified":"2019-11-28T14:20:02","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T13:20:02","slug":"shipowners-hold-the-key-to-unlock-nigerias-economic-prosperity-onyung","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/shipowners-hold-the-key-to-unlock-nigerias-economic-prosperity-onyung\/","title":{"rendered":"Shipowners Hold The Key To Unlock Nigeria&#8217;s Economic Prosperity &#8211; Onyung"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>The President of Shipowners Association of Nigeria, (SOAN), Dr. MkGeorge Onyung\u00a0has said that Shipowners hold the key to unlock the economic prosperity\u00a0of Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Onyung\u00a0made this known while delivering his welcome address at the 1st Lagos\u00a0International Shipping Expo with the theme: &#8220;Shipping , Global Economy\u00a0and International Development&#8221; in Lagos Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 essence of the two days event being the first international shipping conference\u00a0to be organised by the Shipowners Association of Nigeria is to bring\u00a0stakeholders and industry players together on the best way forward and\u00a0give them the opportunity to discuss and proffers solution to the problems\u00a0bedeviling the shipping industry as well as ensure the best practice\u00a0of harnessing the Nigerian local contents.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking, SOAN President said: &#8220;I want to say that I am bold with the authority\u00a0bestowed on me as the president of the Shipowners Association of Nigeria\u00a0to send a very clear message to our president and Commander in Chief\u00a0of Nigeria Armed Forces, General Muhammadu Buhari who happened to be my\u00a0boss sometime ago that the Shipowners hold the key to unlock the economic\u00a0prosperity of our nation.<br \/>\n&#8220;As it is been said, shipping is 90 per cent of global trade. If there&#8217;s no\u00a0shipping, there is no shopping. To those of you who have shopped before, you\u00a0must understand that you are all involved in shipping. That&#8217;s why there is\u00a0a connect between shipping and national development. And of course,<br \/>\ncontrolling 90 per cent of the global economy is not moinmoin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will however say that our sea fearers are the most important workers on earth\u00a0as declared by the United Nations and we, Shipowners value their future because their future is a catalyst to our development. We cannot have\u00a0ships and then handed them over to people who are incompetent . That&#8217;s why\u00a0if anything happens to our crew , we take it as if it happens to members\u00a0of our family&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Onyung described the theme of the conference as appropriate one for the present\u00a0time, &#8220;especially if you know what is happening to our country at this\u00a0trying moment&#8221;. Also\u00a0speaking while delivering his keynote address, the Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi said over the years, shipping has been observed\u00a0as one of the major catalysts for social- economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Amaechi who was represented at the event by the Director of Reform Coordination\u00a0and Service Improvement, Ministry of Transportation, Mrs Grace Atiegoba\u00a0said shipping is a major key to globalisation. He\u00a0said over the last four years, the Ministry of Transportation has placed close\u00a0attention to maritime industry and that there are many concerns that have\u00a0been raised by stakeholders including poor infrastructure of maritime institutions\u00a0in Nigeria saying the Ministry is working hard to address all the\u00a0concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Expo, the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Nigerian\u00a0Contents Development and Monitoring, Hon. (Barrister) Ochiglebor Idagbo\u00a0commended the Shipowners Association of Nigeria &#8220;for organizing the extra\u00a0ordinary event which showcases the vital and pivotal role of the shipping\u00a0value chain across the full spectrum, not just of our national<br \/>\neconomy but indeed the global economy &#8211; accounting directly or indirectly for\u00a090 per cent of the global international trade&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said the National Assembly shares a special bond with the maritime industry. &#8220;We\u00a0are partners in progress.
