A medical doctor, Victor-Bryan Nwala, has shared a medical tip on Twitter, warning against using saliva as lubricant during sexual intercourse because it might lead to infection.<\/p>\n

Nwala tweeted this on his social media page monitored by the\u00a0News Agency of Nigeria<\/em>\u00a0on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The physician warned that the practice could cause infections.<\/p>\n

He said that people should avoid using saliva as a lubricant when trying to \u201cget things moist\u201d during intercourse.<\/p>\n

He warned that saliva contains digestive enzymes that could prove dangerous to the ecosystem of the sexual organ.<\/p>\n

According to the doctor, the bacteria in saliva is different from those in the vagina, and its introduction to the reproductive organ could lead to yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.<\/p>\n

He also listed herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, HPV, syphilis, and trichomoniasis as diseases that could be transmitted to the genitals through saliva.<\/p>\n

\u201cSaliva is not a lubricant! The result can upset your vaginal microbiome and leave you susceptible to developing yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.<\/p>

\u201cAny STI in the throat or mouth can be transmitted to the genitals through saliva.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf your partner has an active herpes lesion, for example, using the spit to \u2018make things slick\u2019 could leave you with genital herpes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis scenario happens more than you might think and it is the most common way genital herpes is contracted.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you don\u2019t see a cold sore on or around the mouth, the virus can still be transmissible.<\/p>\n

\u201cHerpes isn\u2019t the only oral STI you could contract. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, HPV, syphilis and trichomoniasis can also all be transmitted to the genitals through saliva,\u2019\u2019 he warned.<\/p>\n
