The Coalition of NGOs on\u00a0sustainable and healthy environments on Monday has urged the Federal Government to\u00a0obey the international community\u2019s call for a conducive environment\u00a0 by honouring environmental treaties.<\/p>\n

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that National Coordinator of the Coalition, Dr. Odigha Odigha,\u00a0gave the\u00a0advice in an interview with its reporter in Lagos.<\/p>\n

Odigha was commenting on\u00a0the 2019 World Earth Day with the theme: \u2018Protect Our Species.\u2019<\/p>\n

According to Odigha, Nigeria is a\u00a0signatory to many international environmental treaties targeted at ameliorating the impact of environmental degradationamong its inhabitants.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are therefore\u00a0advocating on this year\u2019s Earth Day celebration, that government should respond positively to the international community\u2019s call for a more conducive environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should also make do with the things it had promised to do.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe cleaning up of Ogoni is a welcome development but government should do more to practicalise the exercise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Odigha said that the Earth Day Celebration was being used to raise awareness on environmental issues and the negative impact of human activities on mother earth.<\/p>\n

He said that Nigeria had less than 10 per cent of its forest\u00a0 covered\u00a0 while the world body\u00a0 responsible for the environment\u00a0 prescribed 25 per cent as the minimum\u00a0 standard.<\/p>\n

Odigha said that\u00a0 despite\u00a0 this, the coalition and other\u00a0 environmental agencies in and outside Nigeria had been fighting against the destruction of Cross River Forest.<\/p>

He said that this was because it had remained\u00a0 the only\u00a0 existing forest in the country up till date.<\/p>\n

He said that going by the theme of the 2019 Earth Day; \u2018Protect Our Species\u2019 one could imagine the species that would go into extinction should\u00a0 the the Cross River Forest be\u00a0 destroyed.<\/p>\n

Odigha said that so far,\u00a0 the coalition of NGOs had collected\u00a0 over 400,000 signatories across the globe to ensure that the\u00a0 forest is\u00a0 not destroyed.<\/p>\n

He said that the coalition and all environmental lovers were committed to ensuring that the nation\u2019s forests were protected besides the ecosystems.<\/p>\n

NAN reports that the earth day network believed that the rate of extinctions of species could still be slowed.<\/p>\n

It reports that many of the declining, threatened and endangered species could still be\u00a0 recovered.<\/p>\n

It said that this could be achieved\u00a0 should\u00a0 a\u00a0 global movement of consumers, voters, educators, faith leaders, and scientists\u00a0 demand\u00a0 an immediate action against environmental degradation.<\/p>\n

The Federal Government had through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mobilized other companies in a $180m for a cleanup exercise in Ogoni. A total of 21 companies were picked for the exercise.<\/p>\n
