Nine bodies have so far been recovered with many people still trapped in the debris of a collapsed building in Lagos as rescue operation is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

The news broke on Wednesday that a building housing a school on its uppermost floors collapsed\u00a0 on Mercy Street, Ita-Faaji Lagos Island.<\/p>\n

The three-storey building reportedly collapsed at about 10.30 am.<\/p>\n

Search and rescue operation is presently ongoing and many victims were also rescued alive\u00a0 through the combined efforts of Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and other emergency responders such as the Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency and Federal Fire Service.<\/p>\n

Others include National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigeria Police Force, Rapid Response Squad, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Nigeria Red Cross Society, Lagos State Neighborhood and Safety Corps.<\/p>\n

The exercise is being coordinated by the General Manager, LASEMA, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, with the deployment of heavy and light rescue equipments from LASEMA and its stakeholders.<\/p>

As at the time of filing this report,\u00a0 people are still trapped in the debris.<\/p>\n

Investigation revealed that the school also has a cr\u00e8che.<\/p>\n

Among the nine bodies are students of the particular school. Those injured have been taken to a nearby hospital – Mercy Hospital – for treatment, while the bodies of the dead have been deposited at the General Hospital, Lagos Island, morgue.<\/p>\n

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his Deputy, Mrs. Idiat Adebule, have visited the scene of the unfortunate incident.<\/p>\n
