line-height: 1.5;\">Our Reporter<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Informal trade worth more than N1bn takes place in Kano each month, Regional Coordinator, North West, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nepc.gov.ng\">Nigerian Export Promotion Council<\/a> (NEPC), Mr. Balla Hassan, has said.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan, who also disclosed that the Council is aware of the \u2018back door\u2019 trade ongoing from the Kano grains market, said the NEPC is working hard to help traders to export formally and reap the benefits of their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>He made this disclosure after a capacity building workshop organized by the NEPC-African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Trade Resource Centre in Kano recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aware that people do export from the \u2018back door\u2019 through the Dawanau Grains Market in Kano,\u201d said the Regional Coordinator. \u201cWhat we do is visit the market and obtain information on the product(s), volume and value of products being exported through the \u2018back door\u2019 and forward to the ED\/CEO at the headquarters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5;\">He pointed out that mostly, Agricultural products like maize flour, millet flour, guinea corn flour, ginger flour and other crops valuing above N1.7bn per month are exported informally to Niger, Chad Republic, Algeria and Libya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On what the organization is doing to arrest the trend and capture the various trades under the NEPC documentation, Hassan said, \u201cWhat we are doing to arrest the trend is awareness campaign for people to do formal trade by registering with NEPC to obtain export license.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He explained that NEPC also encourages the people to operate corporate accounts for their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>He added that with corporate accounts, such ones will have NXP forms and their proceeds can be repatriated formally through their bank accounts and with that, the Central Bank would be able to track the volume and value of the foreign earnings through such transactions.<\/p>\n<p>On his efforts for food processors, commodity associations and farmers to take advantage of AGOA before the Act\u2019s expiration, Hassan said his office often carries out programmes to sensitise the exporters in his region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do a one-on-one visit to exporters, hold sensitization programmes just like the AGOA programme, and encourage exporters to form clusters and have equipment to process in bulk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meanwhile, finance is a major problem because stringent measures are involved in getting facilities from banks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the sensitasation programme, the Executive Director\/CEO NEPC, Mr. Segun Awolowo, ably represented by the Council&#8217;s Regional Coordinator, Lagos, Mr. Babatunde Faleke, said the program is to set the perspectives right that AGOA is not a big vocabulary like many have seen it.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Faleke added that, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is the apex body promoting trade and AGOA in Nigeria but the NEPC is not resting on its oars and as part of the Council\u2019s mandate has decided to extend the programme to Kano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of our coming to Kano is to inform participants and exporters on what they need to know and do to take advantage of the exportable products currently 6,500 which they can export legitimately under AGOA, \u201dhe said.<\/p>\n<p>In her own presentation, Head AGOA trade resource centre, Lagos, Mrs. Bolanle Emmanuel, at the event engaged the exporters on &#8220;Understanding AGOA: Export Procedures and Documentation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She enjoined the participants to approach NEPC for registration and seek counsel before stepping out to export their products.<\/p>\n<p>She said exporters and would-be exporters after seeking counsel should decide on what they want to export.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow the products and certification requirements of the products you want to export, follow specification of buyers, back up such transaction with genuine documents, and take the bold step to export,\u201d she said, stating further that the products must meet international standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnsure you meet international standards, ensure transportation and logistics systems are in place on consistent basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind an agent or importer in the U.S., choose a good freight forwarder in Nigeria and a good Customs Broker in the U.S. Make timely delivery; Support your shipment with genuine documents,\u201d she admonished.<\/p>\n<p>Another speaker at the event, Mr. David Aderibigbe, who lectured on &#8220;Exporting Food Products to the U.S.A: FDA Regulations &amp;
