Athletes earlier today defied early morning downpour to participate at the 4th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.<\/p>\n

According to reports, the competition which started at 6.25 a.m. had about 20,000 runners.<\/p>\n

Some of the competitors passed the night around the National Stadium, Surulere to be close\u00a0 to the starting point of the 42km race and avoid lateness.<\/p>\n

An athlete, Babafemi Collins told National Wire he had to pass the night at a friend’s place near Surulere to be able to participate.<\/p>\n

Babafemi, 31, said he would have not been able to participate if he had to journey from his house located at Egbeda area of Lagos.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew since Friday I may not meet up if coming from Orelope, Egbeda axis so I made an arrangement with a friend to pass the night at his place in Surulere,” he said.<\/p>\n

Another athlete, Olufunmi Brown said the early morning downpour was a shower of blessing for the race.<\/p>

“I’m a first timer at the Lagos marathon and I think the rain will provide enough comfort as athletes will not easily get dehydrated,” she said, also praying that the event goes well without any injury.<\/p>\n

Residents around the Surulere axis of the Lagos metropolis and along the route of the marathon are however happy to witness another marathon and according to them it is a good sight to behold.<\/p>\n

Commending the organisers, Access Bank, another athlete, Balarabe Yusuf said, “It is a good development and the bank must be encouraged. They are really contributing to sports and well being of Nigerians.”<\/p>\n

In the international category, the first place winner will cart home a $50,000, second position will receive $40,000 and the third position will get $30,000.<\/p>\n

In the Nigerian category, the first place winner will receive a sum of N3 million, second position will win N2 million, while the third position gets N1 million.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
