The era of military coups in Africa is gone, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has declared in Abuja.<\/p>\n

Buhari who is the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS),
\nmade the declaration as a result of the botched coup in Gabon yesterday.<\/p>\n

He however urged military officers with political ambitions to resign or face their constitutional role.<\/p>\n

Buhari also called for respect for constitutional provisions Gabon advising total respect for democratic rule.<\/p>

In his reaction, Nigerian President said, \u201cThe military officers in Gabon should understand that the era of military coups and governments in Africa and indeed worldwide, is long gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocracy is supreme and the constitutional stipulations on the peaceful change of administration must be respected. That is the only way we can ensure peace and stability not only within the country but also in the region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
