He passed away at the\u00a0National Hospital Abuja on Friday. He was 93 years old.<\/p>\n

The news was broken by the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, on his Twitter handle.<\/p>\n

Shehu Usman Shagari was born in 1925 in Shagari village founded by his great-grandfather, Ahmadu Rufa\u2019i, who was also the Village Head, and took the name Shagari as his family name. His father\u2019s name was Aliyu and his mother\u2019s name was Mariamu.<\/p>\n

Shagari started his education in a Quranic school and then went to live with relatives at a nearby town, where, between 1931 and 1935, he attended Yabo Elementary School; and between 1936 and 1940, he went to Sokoto for middle school, and then from 1941-1944, he attended Kaduna College.<\/p>\n

Between 1944 and 1952, Shagari attended the Teacher Training College, in Zaria, Kaduna State;and from 1953-1958, he worked as a visiting teacher at Sokoto Province.<\/p>\n

He was also a member of the Federal Scholarship Board from 1954-1958.<\/p>\n

According to the Wiki citation on him, the late ex-president entered politics in 1951 when he became the secretary of the Northern People\u2019s Congress in Sokoto, Nigeria, a position he held until 1956.<\/p>

General Olusegun Obasanjo, who was military Head of State had handed over to Shagari in 1979, and he was in office till 1983.<\/p>\n

Before then, Shagari had served as a federal minister and federal commissioner between 1958 and 1975.<\/p>\n

Shagari was made the Turaki of the Fula Sokoto Caliphate in 1962 by the Sultan of Sokoto, Siddiq Abubakar III.<\/p>\n

He worked as a teacher for a brief period before entering politics in 1951 and, in 1954, he was elected to the federal House of Representatives representing Sokoto West.<\/p>\n
