{"id":28919,"date":"2018-12-27T18:39:40","date_gmt":"2018-12-27T17:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=28919"},"modified":"2018-12-27T19:16:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-27T18:16:20","slug":"nigerian-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/nigerian-journalists\/","title":{"rendered":"2019: Journalists tasked on Professional Ethics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigerian Journalists have been asked to uphold professional ethics as they prepare to cover the 2019 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>The call was made by Professor of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acu.edu.ng\">Ajayi Crowther University<\/a>, Oyo, Oyo State, Professor Muyiwa Popoola at a recent training for Journalists drawn from the South West geopolitical zone.<\/p>\n<p>Organised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcng.org\">International Press Centre<\/a> (IPC) and the European Union Support for Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN), the two-day media training with the theme: Best Practices and Professional Reporting of the Electoral Process, attracted about 40 journalists to Oshogbo, <a href=\"http:\/\/osun.gov.ng\">Osun State<\/a> capital.<\/p>\n<p>According to Popoola, \u201cThis kind of workshop bridges the gap between the classroom and the industry and it is highly commended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing, he said, \u201cNews is much easier to describe than to define,\u201d advising journalists not just to search for scoops but to work hard on investigation in order to represent all sides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Journalists, we should not just be searching for scoops, we should research, we should not be lazy and should look for shadow parties on order to solve political conflicts,\u201d Popoola said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that, \u201cJournalists should endeavor to ask the opposing side such questions that, may reveal common ground. This could focus on interests shared by opposing parties, maintain balance and temperate in the use of words.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28922\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28922\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-28922\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Popoola.jpg\" alt=\"Popoola\" width=\"410\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Popoola.jpg 640w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Popoola-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Popoola-110x75.jpg 110w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Popoola-420x288.jpg 420w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Popoola-627x430.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Popoola<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier, Director of the IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade in his welcome address revealed that\u00a0 over 200 applications were received out of which only 40 journalists were invited to participate in the training to represent journalists from the South West geopolitical zone.<\/p>\n<p>Arogundade who spoke through IPC\u2019s Programme Manager, Sanmi Falobi at the event also said, \u201cThe event is organised to critically examine the interconnections between the public, the media and elections towards developing an agenda that seeks to strengthen the role of the media in facilitating a credible electoral process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his own comment, Chairman of the Osun State chapter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nuj.org.ng\">Nigerian Union of Journalists<\/a>, Mr. Kehinde Ayantunji commended IPC for the workshop, urging well-meaning relevant organisations to emulate the gesture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI commend IPC for this brilliant workshop. As a union we are assuring you of our cooperation on initiatives that can enhance our career as Journalists,\u201d Ayantunji said.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering his paper, Nigeria Editor at <a href=\"https:\/\/africacheck.org\">AfricaCheck<\/a>, David Ajikobi, took participants on eliminating bias in election reportage.<\/p>\n<p>Emphasising the need for responsible journalism, Ajikobi remembered the compilations that accompanied the Ebola crisis of 2014 in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28923\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28923\" style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-28923\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi.jpg\" alt=\"Ajikobi\" width=\"482\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi.jpg 1504w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi-768x454.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi-1024x606.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi-110x65.jpg 110w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi-420x249.jpg 420w, https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Ajikobi-727x430.jpg 727w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Ajikobi<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMore than 100 people died from complications as a result of drinking and bathing with salt water according to the Chief Medical Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.luth.org.ng\">Lagos University Teaching Hospital<\/a>,\u201d he remembered, urging journalists to cross check what they hold as facts before reporting.<\/p>\n<p>He however enjoined journalists to get new skills necessary in fact-checking and use such to present correct facts since readers tend to believe what they read from journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Warning journalists not to fall for fake news, Ajikobi advised that journalists must go for the facts instead of mere speculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fact is what can be checked and backed up with evidence.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAsking questions is the first step of accountability if we must do the right thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Warning further on fake news being projected via the social media Ajikobi took journalists through some tools they could use to verify pictures often used to propel fake news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs journalists, you must be careful not to fall for fake accounts when you are using the social media as news source because your credibility built over the years can vanish when you share false information,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p>Also at the training was founder of The Journalism Clinic, Taiwo Obe who took journalists through sessions.<\/p>\n<p>In one of his sessions, Obe, who had invested over 40 years in journalism, counseled journalists to think like entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to leave this workshop thinking like entrepreneurs,\u201d he counseled, challenging participants to change their mind set from the traditional journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Using his own media experience, Obe went on to encourage journalists to think differently in order to maximize their career opportunities and ensure they fact-check before publishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have not trained your mind on what you do daily, I want you to re-condition it and if you are not critical about your thoughts, you would be doing the same routine. According to him, journalists must be equipped in order to effectively cover the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the tools he took the participants through included: Quick, Anchor, Google earth, Nimbles, Facebooklife among others.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the participants took turn to relay their experiences after the two days training.<\/p>\n<p>Temitope Ojo from <a href=\"http:\/\/allure.vanguardngr.com\">Vanguard Allure<\/a> said, \u201cI learnt\u00a0 that the use of certain words could be \u2018injurious\u2019 and inciting to, not only the political class, but also the general public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a reporter, the need to be balanced to both sides cannot be over-emphasised.
