The Securities and<\/span><\/span>Exchange Commission of Nigeria<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(\u201c<\/span><\/span>SEC<\/span><\/span>\u201d)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>officially launched the Green Bonds Issuance Rules at a ceremony yesterday, f<\/span><\/span>ollowing a series\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of engagements with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stakeholder<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and Capital Market Operators, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>SEC rolled out\u00a0<\/span><\/span>its rules on G<\/span><\/span>reen Bonds\u00a0<\/span><\/span>on October 12, 2018<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The SEC\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has collaborated on several occasions with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the Green Bonds Market Development Programme<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a programme supported by the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Climate Bonds Initiative<\/span><\/span>(CBI)<\/span><\/span>, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>FMDQ OTC<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Securities Exchange (\u201cFMDQ\u201d)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and the Financial Sector Deepening Africa (<\/span><\/span>FSD Africa<\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to support the development of a Non-Sovereign Green Bond market in Nigeria. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The programme p<\/span><\/span>rovide<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0training for regulators, investors and intermediaries on Green Bonds<\/span><\/span>\u00a0as part of its efforts to create an enabling environment for issuers and other stakeholders,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that Green Bonds offer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>launch of the rules<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ms<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Mary Uduk<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ag.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Director-<\/span><\/span>General, SEC\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stated<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cAs Nigeria strives to harness the resources of non-oil sectors to anchor the transition to a more resilient economy, there is the urgent need to close the country\u2019s infrastructure gap with investments in sustainable finance initiatives. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The SEC\u2019s release of the green bond rules is a significant step in furthering the complementary efforts of the government, regulators and the financial services industry to direct financial capital to more sustainable economic activity\u201d<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Also commenting on\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the rules<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Dr Evans Osano, Director of Financial Markets at<\/span><\/span>FSD Africa\u00a0<\/span><\/span>commented\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cWe laud SEC Nigeria for the professional and quick turnaround in the preparation of the guidelines. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The new guidelines are prepared in line with leading international guidelines and standards providing confidence to domestic and international investors.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
