Director General of Atiku Political Campaign Organisation (APCO) and former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, said the U.S. Mission to Nigeria has asked his principal to come for his visa to the United States.<\/p>\n

He said the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is a recipient of comments that border on people\u2019s perception but are unfounded.<\/p>\n

Daniel made this known in Abuja on Wednesday evening when he featured on a Channels Television program, Politics Today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can confirm to you that the officials of the U.S. Embassy have called Atiku to come forward for his visa if he needs one,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n

He said it is unfortunate that the public is usually quick to believe in negative comments that others make about the leaders.<\/p>\n

Political opponents of the PDP flag bearer, notably, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have insisted that Nigeria\u2019s former Vice President between 1999 and 2003 can not set foot in the United States because of corruption related issues.<\/p>

It is also widely reported that Atiku has not been able to travel to the U.S. since he left office as the nation\u2019s second in command.<\/p>\n

One of the allegations against Atiku was about the broadband contract scandal involving Nigerian and American officials in the mid-2000s.<\/p>\n

Atiku was alleged to have taken bribes for his role in helping an American firm, iGate, secure the contract to expand broadband in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

An American politician who was a member of the U.S. Congress at the time, Williams Jefferson, was convicted for his role in the contract fraud. <\/p>\n

Jefferson was said to be an associate of Atiku and it
\nIt was reported that the infamous $100 cash discovered in Jefferson\u2019s refrigerator was intended as parts of the bribes to be paid out to Atiku.<\/p>\n
