Former General Secretary of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Professor Yusuf Turaki, has said that corruption has been narrowed to stealing money alone while there is more to the “disturbing hydra headed monster.”<\/p>\n

Turaki made this known during the 50th wedding anniversary of founder of the West Africa Theological Seminary, Lagos, Rev. Dr. Gary Maxey and his wife, Emma Lou Maxey.<\/p>\n

The anniversary, marked at the chapel of the seminary last weekend, was attended by students, faculty members, members of the governing council of the seminary and friends of the celebrants.<\/p>\n

Professor Turaki delivered the key lecture of the day, titled Winning the Fight Against Corruption. <\/p>\n

According to him,\u201cAnti-graft war in Nigeria has been narrowed to when money is stolen which is not total. That somebody steals money or somebody makes himself rich out of private or public institution and when fighting corruption is to create the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and get the police to run after the person. Then is that is how to fight corruption?<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you fight corruption like that, like Nigeria is doing right now, you will never succeed. Corruption is like an octopus with many hands.\u201d <\/p>\n

The professor of Theology and Ethics said the EFCC and ICPC over the years have fought corruption but have not fought nepotistic tendency.<\/p>\n

\u201cEFCC and IPC have fought money corruption but what of nepotistic corruption? He asked.<\/p>

Stating further the former basketball player and athlete said, \u201cPeople do not see nepotism as corruption, people do not see one sided appointments as corruption when we have one right before us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Analysing corruption in Nigeria further, the cleric said, \u201cCorruption is rooted in the way the northerners relate to southerners as it regards political position. This is worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople do not see nepotism as corruption. They do not see one sided appointment as the way Muslims relates with Christians, the ways ethnic groups relates with each other. They are nations within nation, not every areas of Nigeria practices the Nigerian constitution. Corruption is rooted in our social dynamics.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Maxeys are American missionaries to Nigeria who got married August 23, 1968 and blessed with four children. <\/p>\n

They have been in Nigeria for over 30 year and founded the West Africa Theological Seminary (WATS), an affiliate of the Crowther University, Oyo and Asbury Seminary in the USA. <\/p>\n

WATS is said to be the largest non-denominational seminary in Nigeria. The institution trains chaplains for the Nigerian Army, and several other mainline denominations in Nigeria. <\/p>\n
