{"id":27261,"date":"2018-10-11T14:53:51","date_gmt":"2018-10-11T13:53:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=27261"},"modified":"2018-10-11T14:53:51","modified_gmt":"2018-10-11T13:53:51","slug":"nigeria-among-seven-worst-countries-on-world-banks-human-capital-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/nigeria-among-seven-worst-countries-on-world-banks-human-capital-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Among Seven Worst Countries On World Bank\u2019s Human Capital Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria has been ranked among the seven worst countries in the newly released World Bank\u2019s Human Capital Index.<\/p>\n<p>In the index that was released on Thursday at the\u00a0World Bank-IMF Annual Meetings, in Bali, Indonesia, Nigeria ranked\u00a0152 out of 157 countries on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria shared the bottom of the index with countries like Chad, South Sudan, Niger, Mali, Liberia.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0World Bank Group president, Jim Yong Kim, Nigeria is an example of an oil-rich country that neglected its education system.<\/p>\n<p>He added that even then, most of the funds come from the World Bank and other donors, with only a small amount from the finance ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Kim said, \u201cToo many African countries say they are working hard to get rich and then they will spend on health and education. What we are saying is that they need to focus on health and education now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a statement by the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2018\/10\/11\/if-countries-act-now-children-born-today-could-be-healthier-wealthier-more-productive?CID=HCP_TT_HCS2018%20_EN_EXT_PR\">World Bank\u00a0<\/a><\/em>revealed that the HCI shows that 56 per cent of children born today across the world will lose more than half their potential lifetime earnings because governments are not currently making effective investments in their people to ensure a healthy, educated, and resilient population ready for the workplace of the future.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor the poorest people, human capital is often the only capital they have,\u201d\u00a0World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman capital is a key driver of sustainable, inclusive economic growth, but investing in health and education has not gotten the attention it deserves. This index creates a direct line between improving outcomes in health and education, productivity, and economic growth. I hope that it drives countries to take urgent action and invest more \u2013 and more effectively \u2013 in their people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bar is rising for everyone,\u201d\u00a0Kim\u00a0added.\u00a0\u201cBuilding human capital is critical for all countries, at all income levels, to compete in the economy of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0Human Capital Index\u00a0measures the amount of human capital that a child born today can expect to attain by age 18, given the risks of poor health and education that prevail in the country where he or she lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Index measures each country\u2019s distance to the frontier of complete education and full health for a child born today.
