A variety of \u201cfestering\u201d causes and effects surround crises around the world, Nigeria\u2019s President, Muhammadu Buhari, said on Tuesday, at the United Nations General Assembly\u2019s annual general debate<\/p>\n

Most crises usually have a variety of festering causes and effects,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the failure to address them early and effectively that lead to out-of-control conflicts,\u201d he argued, noting that solutions include collective national and international actions.
\nSpeaking about the fight against international and local terrorism, \u201cBoko Haram and Al Shabaab come to mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTerrorist insurgencies, particularly in the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, are partly fueled by local factors and dynamics, but have been increasingly powered by the international Jihadi Movement, namely runaway fighters from Iraq and Syria, and arms from the disintegration of Libya,\u201d he told the Assembly.<\/p>\n

On a brighter note, he drew inspiration from \u201cthe remarkable leadership\u201d of Ethiopia and Eritrea to restore peace between them.
\nAccording to Mr. Buhari, their \u201cremarkable show of Statesmanship\u201d has galvanized neighbouring countries, including Djibouti and Somalia to push for peace in the subregion.<\/p>\n

He noted that a topical consequence of global conflict is the irregular migration of affected people from the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa to Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cIrregular migration entails huge avoidable loss of human lives, puts strains on services in host countries and communities, and fuels anti-immigrant and racist sentiments in Europe,\u201d he stated.<\/p>

Against that backdrop, Nigeria welcomed \u201cthe successful conclusion of the negotiations on the first-ever Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration,\u201d and look forward to its adoption in Marrakech later this year \u2013 \u201cto protect the rights of migrants worldwide, while addressing the concerns of countries of \u2018origin,\u2019 \u2018transit,\u2019 or \u2018destination\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calling migration \u201ca constant in human affairs,\u201d he stated that Africa was grateful to the countries that treated migrants with compassion and humanity, \u201cnotably Germany, Italy and France.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Buhari also cited climate change, \u201cone of the greatest challenges of our time,\u201d as another reason for irregular migration, noting that it has \u201cdrastically shrunk Lake Chad\u201d and was \u201cparching\u201d otherwise fertile, arable lands.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Lake was a major source of livelihood to more than 45 million inhabitants of the region,\u201d he said, explaining that its shrinking has taken jobs, rendered people poor and vulnerable, and exposed to extremists and terrorist elements.
\nThis instability has also intensified internal displacements, leading to intense economic competition, especially between farmers and herdsmen.<\/p>\n

Mr. Buhari called for rededicated international engagement to address the root causes of conflicts in the region.
\n\u201cWhat is required is continuous and robust UN cooperation with national Governments and sub-regional and regional organizations, such as the Lake Chad Basin Commission, the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union, to enhance capacity in conflict prevention, conflict management and peace building,\u201d the President concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
