{"id":26218,"date":"2018-09-11T12:29:08","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T11:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=26218"},"modified":"2018-09-11T12:29:08","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T11:29:08","slug":"u-s-says-u-n-ignores-how-corruption-fuels-violenceinstability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/u-s-says-u-n-ignores-how-corruption-fuels-violenceinstability\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S.Says U.N.Ignores How Corruption Fuels Violence,Instability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tayo Olanipekun<\/p>\n<p>President of the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Nikki Haley, has said the U.N. is too silent on the role corruption plays in fueling violence, instability and criminal activities in countries.<\/p>\n<p>Haley, who is the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, said this yesterday when he chaired a Security Council meeting on corruption,emphasizing that corruption plays &#8220;undeniable role in leading to and exacerbating violence and conflict.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement from the U.S. Office of Press and Public Diplomacy made available to National Wire,the U.S.-organized thematic briefing was the first time the Security Council ever focused on corruption and its consequences for conflict around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Haley said nine out of the 10 countries that Transparency International (TI)considers the most corrupt in the world are on the Security Council agenda,a fact he said the U.N.has ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria is ranked 148 out of 180 countries on the TI latest Corruption Index and the country has in recent years experienced killings as a result of insurgency and conflicts between herders and communities over natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pour billions and billions of dollars into trying to fix these problems. We deploy blue helmets, we set up massive assistance missions. We send experts to all corners of the globe. But we fail to recognize the issue that is staring us in the face \u2013 corruption,\u201d said Ambassador Haley.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>He lamented that instead of reflecting on why this is the case, the United Nations is too often willing to ignore corruption. <\/p>\n<p>Haley added:&#8221;We fear that addressing it will put off governments and shut off cooperation. Or we regard corruption as just the \u2018cost of doing business\u2019 in some countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the approach is backwards because in the most troubled countries in the world, &#8220;corruption isn\u2019t simply a part of the system.
