Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has stated that his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), does not have a reward system.<\/p>\n

Akpabio, who resigned from his position as the Minority Leader in the Nigerian Senate before defecting to the All Progressive Congress (APC), Wednesday, told Channels Television that the National Assembly belongs to all Nigerians and should not be used to discuss personal issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe National Assembly is a place that belongs to all Nigerians, we should use it to discuss national issues and not party issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

On his reason for leaving the PDP, Akpabio said the party did not reward him for his commitments.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me I left the PDP because the party does not have a reward system. For three years my colleagues and I kept the party going but the new leadership came on stream and decided to slap and ignore us, sidelined us,\u201d he complained.<\/p>\n

Akpabio added that, \u201cFor my colleagues who said Akpabio shouldn\u2019t have been the minority leader I need to let you know that I came to the Senate with competence administrative expertise which is enough for my colleagues to have confidence in me, I have capacity to lead people.\u201d<\/p>\n

On some speculations that he may have committed a political suicide by defecting from the APC especially should the party fail to produce the President in 2019, the Senator said Nigerians are always concerned about winning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not only about winning but participation. It does not matter to me if anybody wins or not. Anybody who talks about only winning election would do anything to get it. <\/p>\n

He however said the idea of beating President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 cannot arise as his defection to the APC has strengthened the reelection chances of Mr. President.<\/p>\n

He however tasks politicians to place the constitution of Nigeria more important than partisan politics.<\/p>

\u201cThe constitution of Nigeria should be uppermost in our minds, we should be concerned about the killings in Taraba, in Benue and other places like Plateau, Yobe, Adamawa even in Akwa Ibom State. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe should conspire to bring change in the system, we should support the President in bringing peace to the country we should conspire to put food on the table of Nigerians. We should conspire to make people sleep well in Nigeria and not to take power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The erstwhile Minority Leader however stated that he does not believe in changing political party if not for the development he noticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not someone who believes in changing party. I am a man of the people, I changed party today because of national interest. I cannot sit back when I\u2019m supposed to make contribution and start to criticise the government,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n

On governors taking monthly security votes, Akpabio said, \u201cI have been an executive of a state and a successful governor. I cannot understand what my colleagues are doing with security votes, nobody is complaining they are trying to leave security issues to the Federal Government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still on security situation across Nigeria, Akpabio insisted that security is everybody\u2019s business. \u201cSecurity is everybody\u2019s business even the ordinary intelligence gathering is important,\u201d he said, asking all state governors to mind the security of their states.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell the governors still taking security votes today who are also still crying to the Inspector General of Police and the Army, I never tried such things when I was in government. <\/p>\n

\u201cNigerians are worst hit, we have so many IDPs, so many killings I don\u2019t want us to go into politics of trying to make do with the tragedies that befall certain communities to play politics and blame the society. <\/p>\n

\u201cEvery politician should be concerned about the welfare of the people not to conspire to take power, let\u2019s be concerned about conspiring to secure the lives of the people.
