{"id":23052,"date":"2018-04-18T11:40:33","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T10:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=23052"},"modified":"2018-04-18T11:40:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-18T10:40:33","slug":"rising-debt-may-hurt-nigeria-others-imf-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/rising-debt-may-hurt-nigeria-others-imf-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising Debt May Hurt Nigeria, Others, IMF Warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">The<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0International Monetary Fund (IMF) Tuesday. warned that Nigeria and other debtor nations may run into more troubles with repayment as the global debt levels are becoming unsustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">This is even as the Fund warned that voters\u2019 disillusionment could raise the threat of political developments that could destabilise a range of economic policies in the future, reaching beyond trade policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Nigeria\u2019s next \u00a0general elections holds on February, 2019 and according to tradingeconomics.com, the country\u2019s external debt increased to $18913.44 million in the fourth quarter of 2017 from $15352.13 million in the third quarter of 2017. External debt in Nigeria averaged $7806.46 million from 2008 until 2017, reaching an all time high of $18913.44 million in the fourth quarter of 2017 and a record low of $3627.50 million in the first quarter of 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Economic Counsellor and Director of Research at IMF, \u00a0Maurice Obstfeld, told journalists during the presentation of the World Economic Outlook (WEO 2018), at the ongoing 2018 Spring Meetings in Washington DC, that \u201clooking past the next few quarters, there are notable risks to the outlook as global debt levels, private and public, remain very high, threatening repayment problems as monetary policies normalise in an environment where many economies face lower medium-term growth rates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Obstfeld said the \u201cnew Global Financial Stability Report shows global financial conditions remain generally vulnerable despite the approach of higher monetary policy interest rates, enabling a further buildup of assets-markets vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">He further warned that \u201cgeopolitical risks should not be discounted as well as the recent escalating tensions over trade which present a growing risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">These risks, Obstfeld said, could already be taking a toll on countries, noting that \u201cglobal purchasing managers\u2019 index (pmi) remain in expansionary territory, they have recently softened in advanced and emerging market economies alike owing in part to weakening export orders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">He explained further that the world economy is showing \u201cbroad-based momentum but that the prospect of a similar broad-based conflict over trade presents a worrisome picture.<\/span><\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The IMF Research Director said despite the good near-term projections, longer-term prospects are more sobering. While advanced countries are facing ageing population, falling rates of labour force participation and low productivity growth, they may not likely regain the per capita growth rates they enjoyed before the global financial crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">With regard to Nigeria and other commodities exporters, IMF reiterated the need for economic diversification rather than risk losing out on the growth outlook for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"quads-ad2\" class=\"quads-location quads-ad2\">\u00a0According to IMF, \u201cemerging and developing economies present a diverse picture, and among those that are not commodity exporters, some can expect longer-term growth rates comparable to pre-crisis rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">He, however, warned that Nigeria and other commodities-dependent economies may not be so lucky despite improvement in the outlook for commodity prices. \u201cThose countries will need to diversify their economies to boost future growth and resilience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Going forward, IMF advised that \u201ceach national government can do much on their own to promote stronger, more resilient and more inclusive growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">He argued that multilateral cooperation \u201cremains essential to addressing a range of challenges in addition to the governance of world trade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">These challenges, he said, include climate change, infectious diseases, cyber security, corporate taxation and control of corruption, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0International Monetary Fund (IMF) Tuesday. warned that Nigeria and other debtor nations may run into more troubles with repayment as the global debt levels are becoming unsustainable.
