{"id":22304,"date":"2018-03-19T13:07:17","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T12:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=22304"},"modified":"2018-03-19T13:07:17","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T12:07:17","slug":"banks-lose-2m-customers-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/banks-lose-2m-customers-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Banks Lose 2m Customers In Two Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Data made available by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) show that banks lost two million customers between 2016 and 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The total number of bank accounts dropped to 59 million in 2017 from 61 million in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>According\u00a0to NAN, the number of active bank accounts also reduced by 1.5 million, dropping from 65 million to 63.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>The report showed that linked BVN accounts grew from 26 million in 2016 to 41.3 million in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>According to a banking industry source, the reduction in banking customers is connected to the federal government\u2019s declaration to fight corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Buhari assumed office, many people abandoned their accounts, especially civil servants because of fear of investigation,\u201d the source was quoted to have said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile some outrightly closed down their accounts, others opted for gradual withdrawal so as not to raise alarm.\u201d<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>The source, who works at one of the top five banks in the country, also blamed the BVN for a\u00a0low patronage of banking products, especially in the rural areas, where awareness is very low.<\/p>\n<p>Olaitan Alagbe, a bank customer, told NAN that she closed some of her accounts due to \u201cunnecessary and illegal charges\u201d by banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, the interest rate is next to nothing, so there is little reason to keep your money at the bank when you can turn it over doing other businesses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the agency quoted a CBN source as saying the reduction in the number of banking customers was caused mainly by the introduction of BVN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reduction may not necessarily be a bad thing.
