{"id":21650,"date":"2018-02-22T12:49:05","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T11:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=21650"},"modified":"2018-02-22T12:49:05","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T11:49:05","slug":"abuses-unlawful-killings-amnesty-international-gives-nigerias-scorecard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/abuses-unlawful-killings-amnesty-international-gives-nigerias-scorecard\/","title":{"rendered":"Abuses, Unlawful Killings: Amnesty International Gives Nigeria\u2019s Scorecard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tayo Olanipekun<\/p>\n<p>The Amnesty International (AI) has given a scathing report on Nigeria for 2017, accusing the country of carrying out extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, attacks on journalists, forcible evictions  and crackdown on protesters.<\/p>\n<p>In its report released on Thursday, AI said torture and other ill-treatment and unlawful detention by the police and the State Security Service (SSS) continued, much as it noted that \u201cthe military arbitrarily arrested and held thousands of young men, women and children in detention centres around the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we enter the year in which the Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 70, it is abundantly clear that none of us can take our human rights for granted,\u201d remarked Secretary General, Amnesty International, Salil Shetty.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, authorities in Lagos, Imo and Rivers states continued to \u201cforcibly evict thousands of residents, without adequate notice, compensation, or the provision of alternative accommodation and resettlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It noted that in Lagos State, at least 5,000 people were forcibly evicted from Otodo-Gbame and Ilubirin waterfront communities between March and April, in violation of previous Lagos State High Court orders restraining the  state authorities from demolishing the homes of affected communities consisting of at least 300,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn March, the Lagos State government pulled out of the consultations, saying the communities\u2019 demand for resettlement was unreasonable,\u201d AI said.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>On freedom of the press, AI cited the cases of journalists with Premium Times, Leadership newspaper and three bloggers arrested and detained by security agents for expressing their views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn 19 January, police raided the offices of Premium Times and arrested<br \/>\npublisher Dapo Olorunyomi and correspondent Evelyn Okakwu for several<br \/>\nhours, after the Chief of Army Staff accused the newspaper of offensive publications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn 19 April, Kaduna State police arrested and detained Midat Joseph, a journalist with Leadership newspaper, for a WhatsApp comment. He was taken to court the next day on charges of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance and injurious falsehood. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn 19 September, the Katsina State police arrested three bloggers, Jamil Mabai, Bashir Dauda and Umar Faruq, for criticizing the Governor.
