{"id":21623,"date":"2018-02-21T22:20:26","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T21:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=21623"},"modified":"2018-02-21T22:26:48","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T21:26:48","slug":"ti-ranks-nigeria-worlds-16th-corrupt-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/ti-ranks-nigeria-worlds-16th-corrupt-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"TI Ranks Nigeria World\u2019s 16th Corrupt Nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tayo Olanipekun<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria has been ranked 148th on the 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index of the Transparency International (TI), making it the 16th corrupt country alongside Guinea and Comoros.<\/p>\n<p>In the report made available to National Wire on Wednesday, New Zealand, Denmark and Finland ranked first, second and third respectively as the least corrupt nations, scoring 89, 88 and 85 in that order out of 100.<\/p>\n<p>The report also revealed that Somalia, South Sudan and Syria came first, second and third respectively as the most corrupt nations, scoring 9, 12 and 14 out of 100.<\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s largest economy scored 27 out of 100, dropping one point from its 2016 score and one point better than that of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst performing regions are Sub-Saharan Africa (average score 32) and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (average score 34),\u201d noted the report.<\/p>\n<p>Senegal\u2019s score remained at 45 as it was in 2016, while Cote d\u2019Ivoire bettered its 2016 score of 34 as it improved to 36 in the current index, standing out as two African countries that \u201csignificantly improved\u201d their index score, according to the report.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>TI said further analysis of the result indicates that countries with \u201cleast protection for press and non-governmental organizations (NGO) also tend to have the worst rates of corruption,\u201d as it noted that \u201cat least one journalist is killed in a country that is highly corrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organization, however, recommended that to curb corruption, governments and businesses must \u201cdo more to encourage free speech, independent media, political dissent and an open and engaged civil society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also urged governments to minimize regulations on media, \u201cincluding traditional and new media\u201d and ensure that journalist can work without fear of repression or violence.<\/p>\n<p>It is recalled that war against corruption is a major plank of the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari with many past government officials indicted for graft and cases in courts.<\/p>\n<p>Also Minister of Defense, Mansur Dan Ali, recently directed that \u201crelevant security agencies should as a matter of urgency tackle the propagation of hate speeches through the social media, particularly by some notable Nigerians,\u201d over what he described as \u201cworrisome trend of hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tayo Olanipekun Nigeria has been ranked 148th on the 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index of the Transparency International (TI), making it the 16th corrupt country alongside Guinea and Comoros.
