{"id":20688,"date":"2018-01-22T10:36:16","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T09:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=20688"},"modified":"2018-01-22T10:36:16","modified_gmt":"2018-01-22T09:36:16","slug":"cbn-explains-inability-hold-mpc-meeting-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/cbn-explains-inability-hold-mpc-meeting-january\/","title":{"rendered":"CBN Explains Inability To Hold MPC Meeting For January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, has allayed the fears of Nigerians and the international community over the inability to hold the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) for January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">A statement signed by Emefiele in Abuja explained \u00a0that the meeting, which was earlier scheduled for the Today \u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Tuesday<\/span><\/span>, had been cancelled due to the non-confirmation of the MPC nominees by the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">He explained that the MPC meeting for January would not be hold due to the Bank\u2019s inability to form a quorum as stipulated in the CBN Act 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">In spite of the statutory meeting not holding in January, the CBN governor said that key economic indicators in the country continued\u00a0 to move in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">Consequently, he said the CBN would continue to maintain the key monetary variables as decided in the last MPC meeting of November 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">The Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) was retained at 14 per cent; CRR at 22.5 per cent; Liquidity Ratio at 30 per cent and the Asymmetric Corridor at +200 and -500 basis points around the MPR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">Emefiele cited the recovery in oil prices and boost in domestic production and Nigeria\u2019s exit from recession in 2017 as positive indicators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">Other indicators are the decline in inflation rate to 15.37 per cent and accretion to the country\u2019s Foreign Exchange Reserves, which now stands at 40.78 billion dollars,<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">He said that this underscored the fact that the Nigerian economy remained strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">Furthermore, he noted that strong investor confidence in Nigeria had attracted inflows of about 13 billion dollars through the Investors\u2019 and Exporters\u2019 (I&amp;E) window, opened by the CBN in 2017.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">According to him, these inflows have boosted foreign exchange supply and helped to stabilise the exchange rate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">\u201cWe have also seen Market Capitalisation of our Stock Exchange improve by 22.3 per cent from N13.21 trillion on Nov. 30, 2017 to N16.15 trillion as at Jan. 19, 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">\u201cAlso,\u00a0 the All-Share Index (ASI) rose by 18.8 per cent from 37,944.60 to 45,092.83 over the same period,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">Emefiele assured that a revised schedule of the Meetings for the MPC would be communicated as soon as the Bank met the statutory requirements of membership and quorum for the MPC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">He also assured that the Management of the CBN would continue to sustain the gains recorded in the economy as well as its vigilance and proactivity, to ensure overall macro-economic stability throughout 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">President Muhammadu Buhari, in October 2017, nominated Mrs Aisha Ahmad as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">\u00a0He also sought the confirmation of Mr Adeola\u00a0 Adenikinju, Mr Aliyu\u00a0 Sanusi, Mr Robert\u00a0 Asogwa and Mrs Asheikh Maidugu as members of the CBN\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">However, the Senate is yet to confirm the nominees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m_66776870962364257ydp133f96b5MsoNormal\">\u00a0The Second Schedule of the CBN Act (Section 12(5) and 54, stipulates that the MPC shall meet at least four times in a year and that the quorum shall be six members;
