A former Facebook executive has admitted that he bans his children from using the site \u2013 saying he feels \u2018tremendous guilt\u2019 for his part in creating the service now used by billions of people.<\/p>\n

Chamath Palihapitiya, former vice president for user growth, said, \u201cWe have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had particularly harsh words for tools such as Facebook\u2019s \u2018Like\u2019 button, saying that social media was leaving users \u201cvacant and empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was speaking at a Stanford Graduate School of Business event and urged people to take a \u201chard break from some of these tools.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old added: \u201cThe short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops we\u2019ve created are destroying how society works.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth. And it\u2019s not an American problem \u2013 this is not about Russians ads. This is a global problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a really bad state of affairs right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palihapitiya, whose comments were made in November but have only recently been reported, said the sites can leave users feeling \u201cvacant and empty;\u201d but went on to say that the company \u201coverwhelmingly does positive good in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWe curate our lives around this perceived sense of perfection because we get rewarded in these short term signals \u2013 hearts, likes, thumbs up.<\/p>

\u201cAnd we conflate that with value and we conflate that with truth. Instead, what it is is fake, brittle popularity.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the social media giant has dismissed Palihapitiya\u2019s description as one of a company that no longer exists.<\/p>\n

\u201cChamath (Palihapitiya) has not been at Facebook for over six years,\u201d a spokeswoman for the firm said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Chamath was at Facebook, we were focused on building new social media experiences and growing Facebook around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cFacebook was a very different company back then and as we have grown, we have realised how our responsibilities have grown too. We take our role very seriously and we are working hard to improve.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of work and research with outside experts and academics to understand the effects of our service on well-being, and we\u2019re using it to inform our product development.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also making significant investments more in people, technology and processes, and \u2013 as Mark Zuckerberg said on the last earnings call \u2013 we are willing to reduce our profitability to make sure the right investments are made.\u201d
