Manchester City striker Sergio\u00a0Aguero\u00a0suffered a broken rib in a car\u00a0crash\u00a0in the Netherlands, the club\u2019s manager Pep Guardiola confirmed on Friday.<\/p>\n

Aguero\u00a0sustained the injury after a taxi taking him to an Amsterdam airport following a music concert was involved in an accident on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Guardiola said\u00a0Aguero\u00a0will miss the Premier League leaders\u2019 clash at champions Chelsea on Saturday, and is also set to be sidelined for Argentina\u2019s World Cup qualifiers early in October.<\/p>\n

British media reports claim\u00a0Aguero\u00a0will be out of action for at least two months, but Guardiola did not have an exact time frame for how long his star would spend recovering from the injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first impression is he has broken a rib but the number of days he will be out, I don\u2019t know,\u201d Guardiola told reporters in Manchester on Friday.<\/p>\n

The prolific 29-year-old was due to return to Manchester on Friday morning, with Guardiola insisting he had no problem with\u00a0Aguero\u00a0being in Amsterdam on his day off.<\/p>\n

\u201cA day off is to be happy,\u201d he said. \u201cI am a trainer who doesn\u2019t want to train every day because they (the players) need to rest, mentally and physically.\u201d<\/p>\n

News of the accident first broke when City released a statement that read: \u201cSergio\u00a0Aguero\u00a0will be assessed by club doctors today after being involved in a road accident on Thursday. The City forward was in Holland on his day off and has sustained injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amsterdam police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek told AFP that officers attended an accident in the city at around 11:00pm (2100 GMT) on Thursday after \u201ca taxi-cab hit a lamp-post\u201d.<\/p>\n

He could not confirm the identities of the two passengers and the driver, who all asked to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo other vehicles were involved,\u201d he told AFP early on Friday, adding that three people in the taxi \u201chave been transferred to hospital for observation\u2026 but there were no bad injuries\u201d.<\/p>\n

The accident occurred on De Boelelaan street, said Zuiderhoek, not far from the Arena A where Colombian singer Maluma performed on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Television images showed a black cab, mounted on the grassy middle of a busy four-lane highway, the front staved in after it apparently ploughed front first into a tall blue-and white striped lamppost.<\/p>\n

It was surrounded by at least two ambulances and two police cars.<\/p>

It is understood\u00a0Aguero\u2019s accident occurred as he travelled back to the airport to return to Manchester.<\/p>\n

Aguero, who has scored 176 goals for the English club, on Thursday posted a picture of himself with Maluma on his official Instagram page.<\/p>\n

Aguero\u2019s former club Independiente posted a message of support on Twitter, saying: \u201cStrength and speedy recovery @aguerosergiokun! All @Independiente is with you at this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The striker, who has already scored six times in the Premier League this season, needs only two more goals to become City\u2019s all-time leading scorer and is widely viewed as one of the world\u2019s most feared strikers.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Hero for fans \u2013<\/h2>\n

Yet just seven months ago,\u00a0Aguero\u2019s Eastlands future appeared bleak after he lost the trust of City manager Pep Guardiola.<\/p>\n

Having earned his way back into Guardiola\u2019s good graces by refusing to complain publicly about his treatment last term,\u00a0Aguero\u00a0has made himself indispensible with a barrage of goals.<\/p>\n

He is a hero among City fans after scoring the winning injury-time goal that snatched the 2011\/12 Premier League title away from arch-rivals Manchester United, one of the most dramatic goals in the league\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Signed from Atletico Madrid for \u00a338 million ($51 million, 42 million euros) by then-City boss Roberto Mancini in 2011,\u00a0Aguero\u00a0wasted little time announcing his arrival on the Premier League stage.<\/p>\n

He marked his City debut with two goals in a 30-minute substitute appearance against Swansea.<\/p>\n

By the time City reached the final game of the season,\u00a0Aguero\u00a0had scored 23 times in the league to fire the club towards their first title in 44 years.<\/p>\n

His goals were a key element in City\u2019s second Premier League triumph two years later.<\/p>\n
