{"id":16421,"date":"2017-08-10T22:44:59","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T21:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=16421"},"modified":"2017-09-08T16:33:21","modified_gmt":"2017-09-08T15:33:21","slug":"stakeholders-observe-voters-apathy-lagos-lg-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/stakeholders-observe-voters-apathy-lagos-lg-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Stakeholders lament voters&#8217; apathy at Lagos LG polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Press Centre (IPC), on Thursday organised a stakeholder\u2019s post-election forum on the 2017 Lagos state local government election.<\/p>\n<p>The programme, organised under the Strengthening Citizens\u2019 Engagement Process (SCEEP) project implemented in Lagos by the IPC with the support of ACTIONAID Nigeria and the UKAID through the Department for International development (DFID) drew participants from the Local Government Areas and the civil society to the All Seasons Plaza venue at Ikeja, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>In his welcome address, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, Director of the IPC, urged stakeholders to express themselves as much as possible. He also highlighted the aims of the forum.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the aims were to strengthen the citizens\u2019 engagement in the electoral process and review the inclusiveness of special groups such as women, young people and persons living with disabilities in the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>Arogundade, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos Chapter, said concerning elections in Nigeria that \u201cIf we can get it right at the local level, we\u2019ll get it right at the State and Federal levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the event, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode on Communities and Communication, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, in his goodwill address complained about voters\u2019 apathy during the just concluded Local Government election in Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>Bamgbetan, a former Local Government Chairman stated that \u201cThere are more issues to voter apathy starting with citizens\u2019 apathy in terms of interest in accountability of the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also present at the occasion were Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Chair of the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), Dr. Adewale Aderemi from the Political Science Department, Lagos State University, and representatives from six Local Government Areas in Lagos State including Somolu, Surulere, Amuwo-Odofin, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos Mainland, SCEEP partners from Imo, Akwa Ibom, Kano and Kaduna States, people living with disabilities and party representatives National Conscience Party, KOWA Party, and Accord.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Akiyode-Abiola in her presentation titled \u201cPost analysis of Lagos State LG elections: Appraisal of Stakeholders\u2019 involvement \u2013 the issues, gaps and prospects for improvement,\u201d highlighted the observations of the TMG before, during and after the election. She stated that the People\u2019s Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress sabotaged the pre-election debate organized by TMG.<\/p>\n<p>She also decried the disenchantment and apathy demonstrated by voters during the elections, adding that \u201cCitizens need to take interest in what happens around us for the benefit of future generations.\u201d In her recommendation, she stated that political parties should strengthen internal democracy while encouraging the citizens to be more involved in political parties and participate during elections by voting.<\/p>\n<p>Party representatives expressed their displeasure at the LG electoral process which held on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> July 2017, citing heavy downpour, voters\u2019 apathy, and shrewd electoral officers as part of the unpleasant happenings of that day.<\/p>\n<p>Publicity Secretary of the National Conscience Party, Mr. Seni Ajayi, claimed that \u201cThere was no election; rather an imposition and an overwhelming majority of voters were excluded from the election.\u201d \u00a0Mr. Victor Tegemba, representing KOWA party, reported that the election was free \u2013 free of violence because the manipulations were done in a matured way and in collaboration with the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) officers.<\/p>\n<p>Representing Dr. Sylvester Odion-Akhaine of the LASU Political Science department, Dr. Adewale Aderemi expressed his worries over the just concluded LG elections.
