{"id":16045,"date":"2017-07-31T11:20:11","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T10:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=16045"},"modified":"2017-07-31T11:20:11","modified_gmt":"2017-07-31T10:20:11","slug":"oil-prices-hit-53-per-barrel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/oil-prices-hit-53-per-barrel\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil prices hit $53 per barrel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oil prices hit a two-month high on Monday lifted by a tightening US crude market and the threat of sanctions against OPEC-member Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude futures were 52.90 dollars per barrel earlier in the day, their highest since May 25.<\/p>\n<p>It will be recall that proceed from oil sales forms over 80per cent of Nigeria&#8217;s revenue generation.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures were up 16 cents or 0.3per cent at 49.87 dollars per barrel.<\/p>\n<p>The entire WTI curve is close to moving back over 50 dollars per barrel, with only September and October a notch below that level.<\/p>\n<p>The price rise put both crude benchmarks on track for a sixth consecutive session of gains.<\/p>\n<p>Prices have risen around 10 per cent since the last meeting of leading members by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other major producers, including Russia.<\/p>\n<p>At that instance, the group discussed potential measures to further tighten oil markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S inventories are showing massive draw down, Saudi Arabia seems intent on playing its role as the world\u2019s swing producer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpending sanctions on Venezuela by the U.S will almost certainly be oil price-supportive,\u201d said Jeffrey Halley, an analyst at futures brokerage, OANDA.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>The U.S is considering imposing sanctions on Venezuela\u2019s vital oil sector in response to Sunday\u2019s election of a constitutional super-body that Washington has denounced as a \u201csham\u201d vote.<\/p>\n<p>However, traders said the biggest price supporter was currently a tightening U.S oil market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrong increases in the price of oil \u2026 (were) fuelled in large part by the substantial drawdowns in U.S. inventories over the past several weeks,\u201d said William O\u2019Loughlin, analyst at Rivkin Securities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA continuation of this trend could indicate the oil market is rebalancing thanks to the production cuts by OPEC and Russia,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>After rising by more than 10 per cent since mid-2016, U.S oil production dipped by 0.2 per cent to 9.41 million barrels per day (bpd) in the week to July 21.<\/p>\n<p>Drilling for new US production is also slowing, with just 10 rigs added in July, the fewest since May 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The tighter market was also visible in the price curve, which shows backwardation in the front end.<\/p>\n<p>Backwardation is a market condition in which prices for immediate delivery of a product are higher than those later on.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oil prices hit a two-month high on Monday lifted by a tightening US crude market and the threat of sanctions against OPEC-member Venezuela.
