Twenty-four hours after the Senate mandated its Committee on Financial\u00a0Crimes and Anti-Corruption to sponsor a bill seeking autonomy for the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, the\u00a0bill has emerged.<\/p>\n

The committee was given four weeks to do its job.<\/p>\n

Chairman of the panel, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, at the plenary on\u00a0Thursday presented the bill seeking to establish the Nigerian\u00a0Financial Intelligence Agency and it passed the first reading.<\/p>\n

President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, said the bill would\u00a0pass the second reading before the lawmakers go on their annual recess\u00a0next week.<\/p>\n

He specifically mandated the Chairman of the Senate\u00a0Committee on Rules and Business, which is responsible for the\u00a0schedules of legislative activities, Senator Baba Kaka Garbai, to fix\u00a0the second reading of the bill to next week.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us see if we can schedule it for second reading next week and do\u00a0our best to see if we can pass it as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cChairman of\u00a0the Committee on Financial Crimes and Anti-Corruption, please take\u00a0note of that,\u201d Saraki said.<\/p>

The Senate panel had, on Wednesday, expressed its readiness to probe\u00a0into the management of international grants received by the NFIU under\u00a0the EFCC.<\/p>\n

The legislature also said it would move the unit out of the commission\u00a0and make it independent.<\/p>\n

The move followed the adoption of a motion by Utazi, titled, \u2018Dire\u00a0Implications of the Suspension of Nigeria from the Egmont Group of\u00a0Financial Intelligence Units.\u2019<\/p>\n

The lawmakers unanimously granted all the prayers of the motion,\u00a0including to pass a law that would create \u201ca substantive and\u00a0autonomous Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit and make the unit\u00a0legally and operationally autonomous, with powers for the employment,\u00a0reward, training, promotion and discipline of its workforce\u00a0independently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another prayer was to urge the Executive to include in any\u00a0supplementary budget estimate that might be presented to the National\u00a0Assembly before the end of the year as a separate budget for the NFIU\u00a0in view of the need to lift the suspension of Nigeria as soon as\u00a0possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
