The World Bank says the educational system in Nigeria faces a huge challenge and has pledged to invest more in the nation\u2019s education with a view to improving its quality.<\/p>\n

The Senior Director of Education at World Bank, Dr Jaime Saavedra, said this on Thursday while questions from journalists shortly after the inspection and assessment tour of state-owned Iganmode Grammar School, Sango-Ota, Ogun State.<\/p>\n

Saavedra noted that a huge number of young people demand quality education in Nigeria, but regrettably, there was inadequate access to it.<\/p>\n

Though the World Bank Director admitted that there 11were efforts being made by Federal and State Governments to bridge the gap, he called on them to improve access for more young Nigerians to be enrolled into schools.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThe school system in Ogun State and Nigeria faces a lot of challenges. There are large number of young people demanding education.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, there is a lot of work here in trying to give them the best education that they can get. But obviously, we (World Bank) need to even invest more in country like Nigeria and other countries in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to continue to invest more in education. In the world, we have huge number of youths demanding education and that is the case as well in Nigeria. So, more resources have to be put in education. We at the World Bank are committed to support the work of the state governments.<\/p>

\u201cIn general, the challenges in the system from the Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary are very big. I know there is a lot of efforts going on at the Federal and State levels, but even more, is needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should improve access for more young Nigerians into the education system and even the quality. \u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, Saavedra and his team had earlier visited one of the Ogun State Model Colleges at Akinale in Ewekoro Local Government Area, alongside the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, his deputy, Mrs Yetunde Onunaga, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Modupe Mujota, and other top government functionaries.<\/p>\n

While commending Amosun-led government\u2019s commitment to quality education, he expressed satisfaction on the Model College project and re-emphasised the World Bank support for the state.<\/p>\n

Amosun who described education as one of the greatest legacies his administration intended to leave behind noted that the state government has spent hugely and would continue to spend on education.<\/p>\n

The governor said in spite of the investment, he believed there was still need to do more as no government could do it alone, thereby soliciting the support of multinational organisations like World Bank and other development partners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
