Unity Bank had reported 97 per cent NPL ratio\u00a0in 2016 as against 77 per cent in 2015.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29157\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29158\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29160\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29161\">In addition, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc\u00a0\u00a0 reported 6.6 per cent NPL ratio in 2016 from 8.5 per cent in 2015.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29163\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29164\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29166\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29167\">However, the shareholders expressed that increased NPL ratio in the banking sector in eroding shareholders return and diminishing the nation\u2019s economy as banks cannot avoid to lend to the real sector.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29169\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29170\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29172\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29173\">They further said the CBN has not helped matters by not blacklisting those debtors and enforcing policies that mandate debt recovery.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29175\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29176\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29178\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29179\">The President, Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Boniface Okezie said, \u201cShareholders of the above banks cannot do anything because they were not there when those loans were given.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29181\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29182\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29184\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29185\">\u201cIn the first place banks are meant to give loans to customers but they don\u2019t service these loans because they see it as national cake. For you to grow the economy, you need to give loans because without loans, you cannot grow your business.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29187\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29188\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29190\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29191\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t pay these loans, banks may not be in business. Don\u2019t forget that these loans are from depositors and shareholders\u2019 fund. At the end of the day, there is nothing to appropriate to shareholders in form of dividend.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29193\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29194\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29196\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29197\">\u00a0\u201cFor instance, if you borrow from Unity Bank and have not paid, there is no way you can go to UBA to get loan again. CBN should make it mandatory that a customer that is indebted to one bank cannot go to another bank to access facilities.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29199\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29200\">\u201cCBN has not helped matters by not blacklisting those debtors. The onus lies with CBN because they are the apex banking industry to stop these chronic borrowers\u201d, he stated.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29202\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29203\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29205\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29206\">Also speaking, Chairman, Renaissance Shareholders Association, Olufemi Timothy, said, \u201cWhen you are talking of this issue, you have to talk about the regulator. They have more power to do things than the ordinary minority shareholders. Minority shareholders are powerless, we may have voice but the management and major shareholders will have their ways.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29208\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29209\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29211\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29212\">\u201cThat is why the power of shareholders are very limited. The CBN is aware of this development and they have the records because they are the inspectors. The problems shareholders are having today are the regulators. If they are doing their job, the minority shareholders will just be like the whistle blower and when you blow whistle but nobody is listening, there is nothing we can do.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29214\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29215\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29217\"><span id=\"yiv6635908353yui_3_16_0_1_1497538667928_29218\">\u201cWe have complained but you know with the Nigerian system, we don\u2019t have the power to remove Directors.
