The\u00a0Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,\u00a0has made a strong pitch for Nigeria to embrace the growing\u00a0Animation technology in order to benefit from what has\u00a0become a $300-billion industry and which represents 25% of\u00a0the global audiovisual market.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Addressing\u00a0the opening ceremony of the 7th\u00a0African\u00a0Digital TV Development Seminar in Beijing, China, on Monday,\u00a0the Minister said a developed animation industry in Nigeria\u00a0will be a boost to the country\u2019s already-established\u00a0entertainment industry and make the country an outsourcing\u00a0destination for global animation services.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u2018American\u00a0animation has developed as America\u2019s sixth largest pillar\u00a0industry; in Japan, the animation industry has outperformed\u00a0automobile, iron & steel industries to be the third\u00a0largest industry; and South Korea has undertaken nearly one\u00a0third of the global animation production business. Most of\u00a0the segments in the animation industry are growing at the\u00a0rate of 10% Year over Year, and some segments are growing at\u00a015% Year on Year.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe\u00a0output value of global animation industry has reached over\u00a0US$300 billion, and animation related derivatives have\u00a0exceeded US$500 billion. The animation industry has\u00a0gradually become a pillar of the national economy and a new\u00a0economic growth engine in some countries,\u2019\u2019 he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Alhaji\u00a0Mohammed said Nigeria, and indeed Africa, must move to grab\u00a0a share of the pie by tapping into the animation boom,\u00a0adding that Nigeria, in particular, has all the ingredients\u00a0for a successful animation industry.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201d(Nigeria)\u00a0has a ready domestic audience and market. Nigeria has about\u00a086.2 million people online, and that\u2019s 46.1% of the\u00a0population, ranking it number one in Africa and number seven\u00a0in the world. It has 44 million TV viewing homes in the\u00a0country. Nigeria is expected to switch over to digital\u00a0broadcasting when all 44 million homes have to invest in\u00a0purchasing Set-Top Boxes.<\/p>\n

\u201dIn\u00a0addition, Nigeria\u2019s telecommunication industry has grown\u00a0to $25 billion, and active lines are said to be well over\u00a0113 million, in comparison with 450,000 people and $500\u00a0million investment portfolio in year 2000, again ranking it\u00a0no. 1 in Africa and 11th in the world.<\/p>

\u00a0\u201cNigeria\u2019s\u00a0smartphone penetration is estimated at 15.5 million. 70% of\u00a0the population are below 30 years of age, about 50% are\u00a0below 20 (approximately 80 million), and over 40% of the\u00a0total population are children under 14 (over 70 million),\u00a0while about 20% of the population are teens (approx. 30\u00a0million). These demographics amply demonstrate that the\u00a0uptake of animated content is already guaranteed,\u2019\u2019 he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The\u00a0Minister also said the Nigerian film industry, ranked third\u00a0in the world; the possession of a\u00a0treasure\u00a0trove of literature, brimming with exciting classics such as\u00a0a Forest of a Thousand Daemons,\u2026The Lion and the Jewel,\u00a0The Passport of Mallam Illia and Things Fall Apart, and the\u00a0fact that\u00a0the\u00a0country has an English-speaking workforce, provide added\u00a0advantage.<\/p>\n

\u00a0He\u00a0said the\u00a0current\u00a0administration is committed to developing the\u00a0animation\/creative industry into a new growth sector by\u00a0promoting Nigeria\u2019s creativity, and creating a\u00a0highly-skilled workforce for the industry.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201dAlready,\u00a0it has created a programme called N-POWER CREATIVE, a job\u00a0creation and empowerment initiative by the Federal\u00a0Government of Nigeria for the purpose of training and\u00a0encouraging the development of creative and technological\u00a0skills in young Nigerians such as animation, graphic\u00a0illustration, script writing, storytelling, sequential arts,\u00a0and post production.<\/p>\n

\u201dWith\u00a0such skills, young Nigerians will be able to find employment\u00a0in the ever-growing creative and animation industry. Its\u00a0target will be to equip about 15,000 creative industry\u00a0professionals across story\/script writing,\u00a0graphics\/ illustration, animation, post production by 2017,\u00a0and that figure should rise to 75,000 by 2020 year\u00a0end,\u2019\u2019 Alhaji Mohammed said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
