The Lagos State Building Control Agency has expressed displeasure over the rate of building collapse in the state in particular and Nigeria in general.<\/p>\n

The acting General Manager of the agency, Mr. Oladoyin Lasoju, stated this at the 2017 annual public lecture, award and induction of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Lagos branch.<\/p>\n

Lasoju, who was represented by Mr. Bayo Amosu, warned residents of the state against patronising unqualified people in order to avert building collapse.<\/p>\n

He lamented that the consequences of building collapse in Lagos State were becoming unbearable for the government.<\/p>\n

Lasojusaid, \u201cLagos is a megacity, with a current population of over 20 million, facing challenges of rapid urbanisation and addressing assiduously insecurity, poverty, environmental degradation, infrastructure decay, housing congestion and unemployment, among others. Addressing these challenges requires proper urban planning to make the city inclusive, environmental friendly, economically vibrant, culturally meaningful and safe for all.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have lost so much as a state and as a nation to building collapse. Individuals and groups need to partner the government. I implore each and every one to help the government in order to help ourselves; help educate your neighbours and homeowners to engage the services of qualified professionals and artisans in building or renovating their homes; obtain planning or renovation permit, because it is a means of ensuring that you build in compliance with physical planning laws; and report cases of illegal building or renovation in your neighbourhoods.\u201d<\/p>

He urged house owners and tenants in the state to adopt a good maintenance culture, adding that that was key for the lifespan of buildings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe as a people desire a better city. This is attainable when the government and the people work together. It is in this regard that we are creating the kind of enlightenment and education for Lagosians. This is because we realise that the challenge will be reduced to the barest minimum if Lagosians are aware and imbibe the culture of building according to the laws, rules and regulations, and have a good maintenance culture,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The President, NSE, Mr. Otis Anyaeji, expressed concern over the recurring cases of building collapse in the country.<\/p>\n

While pledging the support of the NSE for the eradication of quackery in the engineering profession, he cautioned end users against using sub-standard products for construction.<\/p>\n

The Lagos branch Chairman of the NSE, Mr. Johnson Ajayi, appealed to both the federal and state governments to patronise the services of Nigerian engineers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
