{"id":12914,"date":"2017-05-06T11:01:02","date_gmt":"2017-05-06T10:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/?p=12914"},"modified":"2017-05-06T13:45:32","modified_gmt":"2017-05-06T12:45:32","slug":"300000-women-die-annually-during-pregnancy-childbirth-unfpa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/sub\/300000-women-die-annually-during-pregnancy-childbirth-unfpa\/","title":{"rendered":"300,000 women die annually during pregnancy, childbirth-UNFPA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 200,000 women die yearly during pregnancy and childbirth, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has said.<\/p>\n<p>Going by the statistics, over 30 pregnant women are lost hourly due to complications surrounding their state, a worrisome development that the world has to battle with.<\/p>\n<p>Former Health Minister, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, who is also UNFPA Executive Director, revealed at the occasion of International Day of the Midwife, which honoured midwives as family \u2018partners for life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Osotimehin urged governments and development partners to expand midwifery programmes and promote an environment where midwives can effectively serve the needs of women and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMidwives save lives, support and promote healthy families, and empower women and couples to choose whether, when and how often to have children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also help avert sexually transmitted infections and prevent disabilities like obstetric fistula, mother-to-child transmission of HIV and female genital mutilation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach year, more than 300,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UN also estimates that some three million babies do not survive the first month of life, and another 2.5 million are stillborn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of them could have been saved by the care of well-trained midwives within the framework of strong health systems,\u201d Osotimehin said.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme for the Day is \u2018Midwives, Mothers and Families: Partners for Life!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Osotimehin said the Day underscored the important roles that \u201cthese women and girls have in preventing maternal and new-born deaths and empowering women to make informed, healthy choices\u201d.<\/p><div data-ad-id=\"32665\" style=\"text-align:center; margin-top:0px; margin-bottom:0px; margin-left:0px; margin-right:0px;float:none;\" class=\"afw afw_ad_image afw_ad afwadid-32665  \">\r\n                                                            <div style=\"font-size:10px;text-align:center;color:#cccccc;\">Advertisement<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"auto\" max-width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalwire.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Banner-1.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n                                                                        \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThese are critical aspects of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seek to alleviate poverty and assist the planet, by the 2030 deadline,\u201d the UNFPA chief said.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) has also reiterated the importance of midwives washing their hands and maintaining hygienic standards.<\/p>\n<p>Fran McConville, Midwifery Adviser of WHO, on the occasion of the Midwifery Day, tasked midwives on hygiene, particularly hand washing.<\/p>\n<p>McConville said that \u201chand washing and lack of water and sanitation is a fundamental constraint to quality of care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs midwives we must work in partnership to improve access to water, sanitation and electricity for all women and babies everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorldwide, 30,000 women and 400,000 babies die every year from infections, such as puerperal sepsis, often caused by lack of water, sanitation and poor hand-washing practices,\u201d the WHO official said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source:NAN<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over 200,000 women die yearly during pregnancy and childbirth, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has said.
