A 40-year-old trader, Bolanle AbdulKareem, has begged the court to dissolve her 17-year marriage because her husband always rapes her in the presence of their children.<\/p>\n

She made this plea at an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Bolanle said her husband, Olasunkanmi, with whom she had three children, always molested her whenever he got drunk.<\/p>\n

She said, \u201cMy husband rapes me in the presence of our children.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever my husband comes home drunk, he will want to make love to me by fire by force and I will caution him not to do it in the presence of our children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will beat me and make love to me by force while the children watch us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a day I came back from work and I met my children, one on top of another, doing what they always see their father do to me,\u2019\u2019 she further told the court.<\/p>\n

The petitioner also said her husband always threatened to kill her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband derives pleasure in beating me. There was a day he beat me and broke my leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day, he threatened to kill me, so I ran to one of my relation\u2019s house.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband came there, he met my sister\u2019s husband ironing his clothes; he snatched the iron from him and started chasing me with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing his desperation, I ran into the street and my husband still chased me with the pressing iron.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime I report him at the Police station, the Police always tell me that it is a family matter and they refused to caution him.\u201d<\/p>\n

She described her husband as an \u201cirresponsible husband and father who did not care about the welfare and education of the children.\u201d<\/p>

According to her, Olasunkanmi neither cares for her nor the children, adding that she is the one paying the school fees of the children.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a tricycle that he is using for business but he always uses the proceeds to drink himself to a stupor and usually loses self control.\u201d<\/p>\n

She begged the court to dissolve their marriage, adding that she was no longer in love with the husband.<\/p>\n

However, Olasunkanmi, who did not deny the allegation of raping his wife, begged the court not to dissolve the union.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, do not dissolve our marriage, I still love my wife. I know I have made a mistake; I will make amends,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The 42-year-old commercial tricycle operator admitted that he used to beat his wife, whenever she flouted his orders.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t derive pleasure in beating her but I only beat her whenever she disobeys my instruction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe day I snatched the pressing iron from my in-law, I only wanted to use the iron wire to beat her and not to burn her.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said that he was not a drunk but that he drank moderately.<\/p>\n

The President of the court, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, ordered the couple to come along with three members of their families for Alternative Dispute Resolution.<\/p>\n

Omilola adjourned the case till May 9, 2017 for further hearing.<\/p>\n
