A Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Minna, Niger State, has\u00a0 on Tuesday<\/p>\n

sentenced one Baba Abuja to 12 months imprisonment for contravening the Saharia law.<\/p>\n

The accused person,\u00a0 was arrested and charged before Chief Magistrate
\nAbdullahi Usman for selling alcohol in a prohibited area of Paiko town in Paikoro Local Government of the state.<\/p>\n

According to the sharia law,\u00a0 which came into effect in the state\u00a0 in 2002
\n, it is illegal for sale of alcohol in local government headquarters without obtaining the required permit.<\/p>\n

However Chief Magistrate Usman gave the convict an\u00a0 option of N200,000 fine.<\/p>\n

\u00a0According to the Prosecution, the arrest was based on a petition by\u00a0 some residents of Paiko which was addressed to the State\u00a0 Governor,\u00a0 Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello,\u00a0 indicating that the sale and consumption of alcohol in the paiko town had constituted a serious security threat to the people.<\/p>

The prosecution said the governor directed the chairman of the Liqour
\nBoard, Barrister Yahaya Halidu, to commence investigation\u00a0 of the petition which led to the arrest of the convict.<\/p>\n

When the charge was read to Baba Abuja , he admitted guilt and was
\nsummarily tried.\u00a0 Items recovered from\u00a0 him and tendered as exhibits
\nincluded cartons of Guilder Beer, Local gins, Star larger beer and Stout.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0 a related development, a female liqour vendor Asabe solomon was also sentenced to six months imprisonment by the same Court, with an option of N50,000 fine\u00a0 for sales of Alcohol in Gbadna village also in Paikoro Local Government area of Niger state.<\/p>\n

When she was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Abdullahi usman , the
\naccused\u00a0 pleaded guilty to the charge of selling locally brewed Alcohol
\npopularly called ‘Burukutu’ without\u00a0 licence.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0 however prayed\u00a0 the court to consider her age and give her a light
