History was made Monday as Edo State House of Assembly got its first female speaker.<\/p>\n

Amid tension and anxiety, Monday morning, when\u00a0the lawmakers convened for their\u00a0legislative duties, \u00a0security operatives cordoned off\u00a0the Assembly Complex.<\/p>\n

The House however made history,\u00a0following as Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Ativie was sworn in amid heavy security.<\/p>\n

More than 10 Hilux patrol vehicles\u00a0and an armoured personnel carrier\u00a0were strategically positioned\u00a0around the complex to forestall a possible breakdown of law and order as Mrs. Aitivie, the only female lawmaker\u00a0in the House emerged the first\u00a0ever female Speaker since the\u00a0democratic dispensation of the\u00a0House from the defunct Midwest\u00a0region to Bendel and Edo States.<\/p>\n

Aitivie emerged the 15th speaker\u00a0of the House from the defunct\u00a0Midwest region to the present Edo\u00a0state.<\/p>\n

The election of the principal\u00a0officers came shortly after\u00a0administered of oath of office on\u00a0the new speaker by the clerk of\u00a0the house, Lawson Ugiagbe\u00a0The House also announced the\u00a0lifting of suspension earlier placed\u00a0on the impeached former Speaker,\u00a0Victor Edoror who was present at\u00a0the plenary session.<\/p>\n

Ativie\u2019s emergence as Speaker\u00a0followed the impeachment of the\u00a0former Speaker of the House,\u00a0Hon. Victor Edoror and his\u00a0Deputy, Bright Osayande, last\u00a0Tuesday over alleged financial\u00a0recklessness, high-handedness,\u00a0dictatorial tendencies among\u00a0others.The House also elected new\u00a0Principal Officers and new heads\u00a0of House Committees shortly after\u00a0administered of oath of office on\u00a0the new Speaker by the Clerk of\u00a0the House, Lawson Ugiagbe.<\/p>

The member representing Owan\u00a0East Constituency, Mr. Foly\u00a0Ogedengbe, retained his position\u00a0as the Majority Leader.\u00a0Kabiru Adjoto ( Akoko Edo I,\u00a0APC) was elected as the new\u00a0Chief Whip, replacing Sunday\u00a0Aghedo (Ovia South-West, APC),\u00a0while Henry Okhuarobo (Ikpoba-\u00a0Okha) was elected as Deputy\u00a0Leader.<\/p>\n

Audu Ganiyu (Etsako West I) and\u00a0Patrick Iluobe (Esan North-East,\u00a0PDP) were elected as Deputy\u00a0Whip and Minority Leader,\u00a0respectively, while Crosby Eribo\u00a0(Egor, APC) and Ugabi Kingsley\u00a0(Etsako East) were appointed as\u00a0co-opted members.\u00a0In her inaugural speech, the\u00a0Speaker noted that \u201chistory has\u00a0been made in the Edo State\u00a0House of Assembly as by the\u00a0power of God and the pleasure of\u00a0my very distinguished colleagues,\u00a0I have been chosen as the first\u00a0female Speaker of the House, a\u00a0position which the entire women\u00a0of Edo state and the world at\u00a0large are so pleased.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to reiterate that all\u00a0political appointees or\u00a0appointment of the former\u00a0Speaker stand terminated. That is\u00a0how it has been in the past and\u00a0even the letters given to them\u00a0have always stated that they will\u00a0leave with Speaker. So, it is not a\u00a0new thing that we are doing. So,\u00a0they stand terminated.\u00a0\u201cIn the spirit of oneness, in the\u00a0spirit of breaking new grounds\u00a0and working harder and in the\u00a0spirit of reconciliation, I wish to\u00a0announce that the suspension of\u00a0the honourable member\u00a0representing Esan Central, Victor\u00a0Edoror, is hereby lifted. So, he can\u00a0come in and join us in business of\u00a0the development of our\u00a0fatherland.\u201d<\/p>\n

She assured the Executive arm of\u00a0government of the House continue\u00a0collaboration to collectively \u00a0transform the State towards\u00a0making it the envy of all as well\u00a0as promulgate laws that will uplift\u00a0the living standard of the people\u00a0of State.<\/p>\n

The House also passed a\u00a0resolution to extend its business\u00a0calendar for the fourth quarter\u00a0(first session) of the sixth\u00a0Assembly to May 18, 2016,\u00a0bringing the total number of days\u00a0for the session to 203.\u00a0Order 20, 21 and 22 of the\u00a0Standing Order of the House were\u00a0suspended to enable the\u00a0extension so as to \u201ccomplete\u00a0some very urgent assignments\u201d\u00a0while sitting was later adjourned\u00a0to May 10, 2016.\u00a0In an interview with journalists,\u00a0the former Speaker, Edoror said\u00a0he has accepted the decision of\u00a0the party to maintain the current\u00a0leadership of House.\u00a0He said, \u201cAs far as I am\u00a0concerned, I am very pleased with\u00a0members of the Edo State House\u00a0of Assembly. I give them kudos\u00a0for giving me the opportunity to\u00a0lead them for one year. But it is\u00a0another opportunity for them to\u00a0test another leadership. In about\u00a0two, three months, they will begin\u00a0to compare. But I wish them well.\u00a0\u201cI wish the new Speaker well.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0wish members of the Edo State\u00a0House of Assembly well and,\u00a0above all, I wish the people of\u00a0Edo State (well) because the\u00a0party that I belong to, the\u00a0government that I belong to, we\u00a0have met and have resolved that\u00a0it should be so and so be it.\u00a0And in the spirit \"Nigeria_Edo_State_map\"of\u00a0sportsmanship, I think in this\u00a0game there is no victor no\u00a0vanquished.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
