Men will be able to marry, have sex with robots soon \u2013 Scientists<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sex with robots is \u201cjust around the corner\u201d, an expert told a global conference in London this week featuring interactive sex toys and discussions on the ethics of relationships with humanoids.<\/p>\n

\u201cSexbots\u201d are a staple of science fiction \u2014 the idea of robots as sex partners is explored, for instance, in recent films and television series like \u201cEx-Machina\u201d and \u201cWestworld.\u201d<\/p>\n

But some specialists believe the first animated lovers made of metal, rubber and plastic, programmed to provide sexual bliss, will take a step into reality just months from now.<\/p>\n

\u201cSex with robots is just around the corner, with the first sexbots coming\u2026 some time next year,\u201d artificial intelligence expert David Levy told the International Congress on Love and Sex with Robots at Goldsmiths, University of London.<\/p>\n

US California-based company Abyss Creations next year will start marketing sex robots that are billed as life-like, with the ability to talk and move like humans.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Levy said, people should entertain the thought of marriage with robots as early as 2050.<\/p>\n

The conference in London showcased some of the latest developments in robotic sex toys, such as gadgets which allow couples to kiss, no matter how far apart they are.<\/p>\n

The \u201cKissenger\u201d, which attaches to your mobile phone, contains sensors to detect the pressure of a kiss and transmit it to your partner\u2019s device in real time. It has been under development for several years.<\/p>\n

Now students at Tokyo\u2019s Keio University are developing the \u201cTeletongue\u201d, aimed at providing \u201cremote oral interaction\u201d and designed to be \u201ckinky\u201d, according to co-creator Dolhathai Kaewsermwong.<\/p>\n

It allows couples to send licking sounds and sensations through cyberspace using a \u201clollipop\u201d, creating an \u201cimmersive experience\u201d, she explained.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018Moral panic\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n

Lynne Hall, of the University of Sunderland\u2019s school of computer science, in northeast England, said that robots could create \u201ca fantastic sexual experience\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are lots of benefits to sex with robots\u2026 it\u2019s safe, you never catch any disease, you can control it,\u201d she told the conference.<\/p>\n

She rejected the idea that robots would replace or threaten sex with humans, however.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are somehow fed by moral panic\u2026 \u2018It\u2019s disgusting\u2026 nobody will ever have sex with a human again\u2019,\u201d Hall told the conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut people are regularly watching porn\u2026 and they are still having sex with humans,\u201d she said.<\/p>

Levy, the author of \u201cLove and Sex with Robots\u201d, from which the annual conference takes its title, said marriage to robots would be the next logical step.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs sex with robots becomes more and more commonplace\u2026 we shall come face to face with the very real possibility of marriage to robots,\u201d the former international chess master said.<\/p>\n

And why not?<\/p>\n

Robots of the future will be \u201cpatient, kind, protective, loving\u201d, never \u201cjealous, boastful, arrogant, rude,\u201d Levy said \u2014 \u201cunless of course you want them to be\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the following qualities and many more are likely to be achievable in software within a few decades,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Levy is convinced that rapid changes in attitudes to sex and marriage in recent years point to a world where \u201cmore and more people come to accept sex and love with robots\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018Robot personhood\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n

In his vision, robot parents could become a social norm, with laws to acknowledge \u201crobot personhood\u201d and make marriage and parenting by humanoids more than just a fantasy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time is fast approaching when the theoretical debate must evolve into laws, and the consequences of those laws will be staggering,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

For now, however, sexual relations with humanoids are a step too far for many.<\/p>\n

Emma Yann Zhang, a PhD student at London\u2019s City University who worked on the Kissenger prototype, believes there is still a long way to go before people will accept the idea.<\/p>\n

In a pilot study conducted by the Imagineering Institute in Malaysia, partnered with City University, participants were asked about their perceptions of sex robots, including the potential for intimacy and attraction.<\/p>\n

Although many were open to the possibility that humans could be attracted to robots, \u201cwhen asked \u2018would you have a robot as a lover?\u2019, most of them said \u2018no\u2019,\u201d said Zhang.<\/p>\n

Hall agrees that the \u201cparadigmatic change\u201d suggested by Levy is \u201cnot going to happen for a very long time\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the meantime AI enthusiasts will be watching closely to see how quickly the new generation of sexbots fly off the shelves next year.<\/p>\n
