A clergyman serving with the Baptist Convention, Pastor Noah Adedokun has alerted the public via his Facebook page on the recent havoc wrecked by suspected Fulani herdsmen on some communities involving some of the mission fields run by various missionaries.
Adedokun, a graduate of the Baptist Seminary, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, stated the degrees of the recent attack of the invaders just few days to Christmas and hereby soliciting for public support for the affected farmers, missionaries and villagers.
“Merry Christmas beloved we urgently covet your prayers because Fulani herdsmen have invaded our land, killing, burning houses and barns. Those that escaped are relocating to the Republic of Benin for safety. I was there yesterday 24/12/2017 to have first-hand information about havoc wrecked by the Fulani herdsmen,” the statement reads.
The clergy continued that, “A village called Oguniko, Oke Odo Ibore, where majority of our members of Ayo Oluwa Baptist Church, Abule Abiodun, Oke Odo, Ibore are living were burnt into ashes.”
He however called on Nigerians to assist the affected poor villagers and parishioners. “We bless God almighty that no life is lost in this village but thirty barns of maize, six sewing machines, many motorcycles, bicycles, generators, grinding machines, clothes, foodstuffs, money etc. were lost to the fire. Please we urgently need foodstuff, good clothes and household materials,” he pleaded.
In recent times, suspected Fulani herdsmen have wrecked havock across Nigerian farming communities especially in the north central states. The incessant attacks have resulted in Benue State passing a bill criminalizing open grazing in the state.
Logically, while there are no established grazing belts across Nigeria and coupled with urbanization, there is bound to be clashes between farmers and herdsmen whose cattle herds are also increasing.
Meanwhile the government has the responsibility of wading into the crisis with the aim of proffering lasting solutions.
