Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has promised quick relocation of the State Polytechnic, from its current temporary campus at Elebele, Ogbia Local Government Area of the state to Aleibiri, in the Ekeremor council area of the state.
Diri stated this on Thursday during the second combined matriculation ceremony of the institution held at the school’s permanent campus, Aleibiri.
Represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr Gentle Emelah, the Governor who doubles as the visitor of the polytechnic noted that it was borne out of his quest to relocate the institution that he graciously approved the renovation of old existing building infrastructure at the main campus of the school to facilitate its quick relocation in addition to his commitment to executing other infrastructural projects in the school soon.
He said: “I commend the management of the polytechnic in your effort in keeping the school afloat at its temporary site, Elebele.
“In the coming months the school would continue to enjoy Government’s support for infrastructural upgrade.”
Presenting his matriculation speech, Rector of the Polytechnic, Chief Wisdom Soreh said a total of 331 students, comprising 161 new students for the 2022/2023 academic session and an existing 170 old students for the 2021/2022 academic session which cut across seven academic programmes of the school were the matriculants in the combined matriculation ceremony.
He charged the matriculating students to stay focused on their goal of passing through the institution with honours, noting that students were expected to avoid any form of distractions as the institution has zero tolerance for cultism, hooliganism and any form of corruption, respectively.
The Rector also reeled out critical areas of requirements of the institution to the governor, saying that despite the paucity of funds, the Polytechnic has stayed afloat.
The Rector said: “Our dear Governor and champion of the Prosperity mantra, despite the dwindling resources, the polytechnic has stayed afloat to deliver on our mandate to students and the state. We’ll continue to be prudent and use our meagre resources judiciously.
“At this point, we respectfully place our needs and areas that require His Excellency’s attention.
“His Excellency, Sir, please permit me to state the key requirements of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), arising from the 2022 accreditation results and the conditions attached for the introduction and accreditation of other new programmes at both the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels.”
Chief Soreh stated the areas of the school’s requirements were as follows: Mounting of Mechanical and Civil Engineering Technology programmes, employment of key specialized staff to curb the deficiency in staff, provision of coaster buses for staff and students to ease transportation, provision of standard medical facility with ambulance, operational vehicles for principal officers and key departments and units, as well as upward review of the institution’s subvention, amongst others.
