The Regional Manager of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) in Niger state, Engineer Yahaya Jere and other senior officials of the company yesterday escaped mob attack at the Niger state House of Assembly where they had gone to honour a summon of the legislators over power outage in Minna.
The power outage in the city for almost 72 hours over peaceful protest by youths had irked the lawmakers at plenary on Wednesday resulting in the summon of the Regional Manager for direct questions and answers.
However by the time the regional manager and officials that accompanied him were ushered into the legislative chamber, a crowd of APC supporters had gathered to witness the screening of commissioner nominees also scheduled by the
Assembly.
It was learnt that the response of the regional manager to questions on why the darkness in the city for three days infuriated the lawmakers and the crowd who concluded that AEDC do not have regards for the people of the state.
Tension at the chamber was said to had heightened when the manager said the protesting youths do not know the difference between Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the AEDC
It was learnt that the plenary session became rowdy and the regional manager and his team have to be whisked into hidden when the mob became agitated and uncontrollable.
It was gathered that the AEDC officials were later smuggled out of the Assembly complex to safety by security escorts attached to the Speaker of the Assembly Hon. Ahmed Marafa.
A principal officer of the Assembly who spoke on the condition of anonymity told National Wire that it was the responsibility of the House to ensure the safety of its guests hence the protection provided by the Speaker.
The Assembly however resolved to summon the headquarters of AEDC at a later date for cogent explanations on the power situation in the state.
